Stone-Throwers Say They Were Stoned (Updates)

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

The Major General of the Commission then ordered the Prey Nup District Police Inspectorate and the Bit Trang Commune police to search and bring the two suspects to be interrogated at the police station. But once the culprits were taken into custody by administrative police of Bit Trang commune, the two suspects stubbornly refused to confess, until April 2, 2023 at 1:45am, when they both confessed to being on the motorbike and throwing stones at the Lexus the previous night.
The men said that they were angry because the oncoming car headlights were shining in their eyes, so they threw rocks at it.

"the two suspects stubbornly refused to confess, until April 2, 2023 at 1:45am."

I wonder what methods of coercion the police use. Stubbornly refusing to confess is also the behaviour of someone who has nothing to confess. A good kicking and the threat of a month in jail OR a false admission and signing a contract not to do it again?

The 'defence' of being angered by bright headlights doesn't wash as they would have to have the rocks on them so there is premeditation; they were looking for a target.

My ex worked for the gendarmerie for a while. She resigned because the "coercive methods" were disturbing her.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

I've often wondered why Khmers seem to confess within hours of arrest, often to capital crimes.

Yet I have never managed to extract any confession or even a tacit acceptance of wrongdoing or even wrongness. Even when faced with overwhelming evidence, they change the subject and/or come back with such an illogical reply you are stumped. Often this involves blaming you: "You are lazy and should have done it yourself, so it's your fault that I dropped/destroyed your [insert any valuable property here] and it is now broken" There then follows a mega-sulk until you accept you are in the wrong.
