Celebrating International Women's Day in Cambodia

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

There are signs of descent, protest, and even support from male colleagues, being displayed in Iran. Give them time; another thousand years or so should see islam well and truly ready for the 20th century.

There are different levels of inequality. The fact Cambodia does better than Iran is no reason to compliment them IMHO.

Anyway, in Cambodia they've been trying for decades, in their own away, to put it on the agenda.

PM HE Thanks His Spouse for Her Endless Support
07 March 2023
Phnom Penh (FN), Mar. 7 – Cambodian prime minister HE thanked his spouse Bun Rany HE for her endless support, and claimed that everything he has today cannot be achieved without his spouse.

The premier presided over the celebration of the 112th Anniversary of International Women's Day on Tuesday (Mar 7) at the Peace Palace.

"Without a virtuous and capable wife, I might have lost support and my children might as well have lost support, yet my wife did her job well,” the premier added.

On that occasion, Samdech underlined that helping women is like helping ourselves, adding that it is a great fortune if the female members of the family are educated.

Philanthropists’ help sought in building high school dormitories
Prime Minister HE called on philanthropists to help build dormitories in high schools for girl students to encourage rural female education, thereby reducing the education gap between the urban and rural women.

Speaking at the celebration of the 112th Anniversary of International Women’s Day at the Peace Palace, Mr HE said he would continue to propose appropriate measures and promote the participation of female students in higher education.

At the annual meeting of the National Council of Cambodia for Women on February 21, he had assigned the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports to build dormitories for female students to facilitate their studies in Phnom Penh and other provinces, he said.

“I would like to call on all philanthropists to participate in the construction of dormitories for girl students in high schools, across the communes and districts in the provinces.”

“There are poor students facing difficulties in pursuing higher education due to lack of accommodation for them to stay and study,” he said.

In addition, he said that when a school is under construction, the Education Ministry must also build dormitories for female students in secondary schools, thereby the number of female students pursuing higher education will increase.

Cheng Limhan, director of the Preah Vihear Provincial Department of Education, said yesterday that there were a number of high schools in Preah Vihear province with dormitories for students and teachers, such as Chea Sim Tbeng Meanchey High School (20 rooms), Chey Sen High School (40 rooms), Rovieng High School (20 rooms), Khemarak Techo High School (20 rooms) and Phnom Chhat Sen Chey Secondary School (10 rooms).

This is a big problem, but not just for girls. I have an 'in living' high school student whose house is 30 km from the nearest high school. Of course traveling 60 km six days a week to go to school isn't a serious option.

Alex wrote: Tue Mar 07, 2023 2:53 pm If the government ever realizes that Cambodia has too many public holidays, this would be a great one to axe, as it's lacking any real connection to Cambodia whatsoever.
With the recent amendments, and the fact that holidays that fall on a Sunday are not carried forward to Monday, we now have 12 public holiday. Pretty much on par with the rest of the world.
According to Acleda bank there are 15 actual public holidays totaling some 21 actual days (some are more than one day long). Yeah sure, some will fall on a Sunday, but that obviously changes every year and also happens in other countries. 2023 is one of those years where many fall on a Sunday. Not sure it's on 'par' with the rest of the world, but happy to stand corrected.

Singapore 11
Vietnam 13
Thailand 16
Laos 13
Malaysia 12
They have been actively pruning some public holidays since 2020 or so. Think it peaked in, iirc, 2017 or 2018 when there were almost 30 and they briefly made Chinese NY a multiday public holiday before walking it back the next year

There was also a run at Euro Park hosted by KK Running Club. 8.3 kilometers, obviously.
