Chinese Man Arrested for US$5 Million of Bad Checks

Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): A Chinese businessman has been remanded in custody by a Phnom Penh Municipal Court judge in connection with the offense of issuing more than US$ 5 million in dud checks to creditors.

The accused, who was sent to court on March 1, 2023, is identified as WU QUANG JIE, male, born in 1974, Chinese, Hong Kong, residing at No. 13, Street 1986, Sangkat Phnom Penh Thmey, Khan Sen Sok. He is Chief Representative of Zhonglian International West Construction Company.

Police confirmed that an arrest warrant was issued by Mr. Chreung Khmao, Prosecutor of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on February 17, 2023, and that the police arrested Mr. WU QUANG JIE on the 24th February 2023, at the point of Street 315, Sangkat Boeung Kak I, Khan Toul Kork.

According to the complaint by the creditors, five checks in the name of Zhonglian International West Construction Company were issued without funds:
- Check No. 705911, amounting to 60 thousand dollars, dated June 20, 2022.
- Check No. 705914, amounting to $ 500,000, dated 27 June 2022.
⁃ Check No. 705913, amounting to $ 3.5 million, dated August 19, 2022.
⁃ Check No. 705915, amounting to $ 500,000, dated August 26, 2022.
⁃ Check No. 705920, amounting to $ 40,000, dated August 26, 2022.
The creditors then filed a complaint with the Cambodian authorities.

Italy is still full of them. Nearly all payments over 1000 Euros (legal limit for cash transactions) are made by check.

While travelling in SEA I still use Travellers Cheques. Usually in 500$ denominations with a few 100`s. I trust them more than plastic and if the shit hits the fan I have a large amount of cash (nearly) immediately available. I also feel safer having a few thousands in TC`s than Cash. Get replaced if stolen. Accepted everywhere, only in The Phillipines it was difficult to cash them at a reasonable rate but still possible.

Interesting. I really thought that TC's were a thing of the past.
