New Tourist Attraction - Cambodian Weddings

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Pretty much everyone is invited to a Cambodian wedding - so it makes perfect sense. Even more when in this case you would never be invited to these guests wedding so no need to recriprocate.
Stay classy na

Apparently once you receive an invitation you basically can't refuse to either attend or send a donation in lieu of attendance.
^this
You can drop the word 'apparently'. You either show up and pay, or pay in lieu.
Maybe the bloke in the OP's post could arrange to take the invites from people who don't really want to go and transfer them to the tourists!

Nothing compared to the age gaps between many foreign men & Cambodian/Thai/Filipino/etc. women

Kammekor wrote:Yes. Indeed. The last wedding I attended was one of those over the top ones in a restaurant with about a hundred tables, so about a thousand attending. People I shared a table with managed to take two half cases of Ganzberg with them in a bag.
At smaller weddings I have never experienced this though. They also tend to record the visitors and their donation in a book at those weddings instead of setting up a heart shaped box for anonymous donations
Not to worry, cheap Charlie’s family has made sure to invite Missus to every wedding they’ve had ever since.

Everyone knows she’s out of the village, and thus will always pay her share.

Just like everyone in the village knows missus is a big softie in her heart and if they look pitiful in front of her long enough, she’ll give in and help.

"Something else" fits better for 40+ year gaps, not 8-13-16 year age gaps you referenced - IMO

I'd pay not to be invited. Bland same food, terrible music, and uncomfortable seating.

Working with a large team certainly multiplies the number of invites you receive, perhaps I wouldn't mind it so much if that wasn't the case. Adding in the invites where you barely know the person, no thanks.

Only ever did one Khmer wedding. Invited by a colleague who was well liked and respected. Her wedding was actually enjoyable, save for the “cheers” every third mouthful and the under-table waste. Food was actually okay. But after that, I sent money in lieu of appearance. Didn’t really want to go through another one.
