Cambodia's Agriculture Census 2023 to be Conducted in April
AKP Phnom Penh, February 17, 2023 --
The Ministry of Planning will conduct the Agriculture Census of Cambodia 2023 throughout the country from April 1 to 30.
The information was shared in a meeting here on Feb. 15 chaired by H.E. Dr. Chhay Than, Senior Minister and Minister of Planning, and Chairman of the National Committee for Agriculture Census of Cambodia 2023.
H.E. Dr. Chhay Than underlined that the result of the census is crucial for the development of policies on agriculture, economy, environment, society, climate change and people's welfare.
It will also serve as key indicators to monitor and assess the government's economic development policy, the national development strategic plan, poverty elimination strategy, and Cambodia's sustainable development goals (SDGs) 2016-2030.
It will be the second census of its kind and the first one was conducted in 2013 through the technical support from the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and the financial support from the Royal Government of Cambodia.
Cambodian population was estimated at over 17 million or 3.9 million households in 2023 and 2.7 million of the households are farmers, said the senior minister.
He called on competent officials to prepare well to roll out the census to collect the accurate and most updated agricultural data for a well represented and useful result.

Ministry to conduct census on agriculture
The Ministry of Planning will conduct a one-month census on agriculture across the country to develop agricultural, economic, environmental, social, climate change policies to contribute to the eradication of poverty.
According to the Minister of Planning Chhay Than, census officers are required to attend a four-day training course. Thereafter, they will conduct statistical surveys and interviews to collect data on all types of agricultural establishments located throughout the county to understand their quality and efficiency.
The training will commence from March 27 to 30 and the census will commence from April 1 to 30.
“Our 2023 census is indispensable as the data will help
to develop agricultural, economic, environmental, social and climate change policies and the well-being of Cambodians.” Than said.
This year’s census, previously conducted in 2013, is also an important indicator for monitoring and evaluating the Cambodian government’s economic development policy programme, national development and poverty eradication strategy and sustainable development goals in Cambodia,
he added.
The task of the census is huge, based on estimates that the population of Cambodia will increase to more than 17 million, with nearly 4 million households by the end of 2023, while there are over 2 million households currently engaged in agriculture nationwide.
