Bangkok taxi ,meter scam from airport into town

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

All I wanna say is Bangkok taxi drivers are mostly scums of the earth having a bad reputation. You do get a few good ones but a rarity. If I really need to take a taxi I’d alway make it clear “meter meter” before I board.

I noticed a small towel on the meter a couple of times on my recent trip. Now I know the reason.
Many times that I needed a taxi in the city, the driver would not unlock the doors until he knew my destination. I would then be quoted a fare about 3X the metered fare, always rounded up to the nearest 100. When i eventually got a meter ride, either by opening an unlocked door and jumping in or by the driver being willing, I was amazed at the low price and felt sympathy for the driver and tipped him well. I wish the authorities would just double the meter fares and stop drivers refusing rides.

I agree Grab is expensive and why pay them 20% of the fare when there are cars around. I use Bolt to pick me up from places that don't have passing taxis.

From the airport, I like the train but it gets crowded. The short journey taxi section is great when I'm staying in Lat Krabang. Never had to wait long there. Sometimes I take the free airport shuttle bus to the Bus Station (officially called the Transportation Center). From there you can take a matered taxi (no 50THB surcharge) or order a Bolt. Generally have to wait about 5 minutes for the shuttle bus. Never seen it crowded. Drivers toss you around as they race around the curves.

I arrived in december in KUL airport, and took the train into the city, dont remember exactly the price, but not really cheap, about 10 US i think. From the central railwaystation i took taxi to my hotel/appartement complex, and its very well organised, you have to go to a counter and tell the pretty girl where you want to go and pay her, she gives you a voucher for the taxi-driver. And the taxi was not expensive. Later i found out if i had taken a grab straight from the airport it would have been almost the same price.
Recently i heard in PP airport there also is a kind of taxi-counter who uses the same system, but i knever payed attention about it, useally walk out and take a taxi or tuktuk, anyone tried the taxi-counter at PP-airport ???

I think in Phnom Penh it's really a no-brainer, because Grab from the airport to the city is cheaper than using the taxi counter. I used the taxi counter in the good old days, but not recently.

On my first trip to Bangkok my sister who was a resident at the time told me not to fall for the airport limousine service scam - "make sure you get a normal taxi and insist on the meter, else you'll get scammed".

So I took the limousine, a really tidy S-class Merc with all the trimmings thrown in, hot face towel, bottles of water, cheeky bag of nuts & dried mango, super comfortable ride, and put me just shy of 50 quid out of pocket. Best airport taxi ride I ever had.

Taxi's in BKK are amazing, so cheap and quick

Much cheaper than the cunts with tuk tuks and motodops there

That said if I jump into one (that's what you do, not tell them your destination first) and he hasn't got the meter running with no fuckery in the first ten metres I stop him, tell him to go fuck himself and get the next taxi behind me instead

I really love driving around in taxi while in BKK. True there is a fair share of cunts that dont want to use the meter but as @yong said they are easily avoided but telling them direct you want a "meter-ride". They will agree or give you a clear handsign that they will not. Just wait for the next taxi..there are literally zillions of them.

I also really did like the tuk-tuk drives but in recent years it was hard to find one that was not driven by a jerk asking ridiculous prices for even short rides. Bag snatching is not unheard of while sitting in one.

Taking a motodup is a very good solution for short rides or during peak hours..or when you are in hurry. But unfortunately they also tend to try a rip-off on farangs that do not speak any thai. I have seen some corners where they even quote the "fixed" prices for certain destinations on carton boards...but mostly in thai letters only. Using the same guy over and over greatly reduces the fares over time.
work is for people who cant find truffles

Thai taxi drivers, meters, and service complaints...
LOCAL
Taxi driver turns on meter before arriving at pickup spot.
February 6, 2023 Tanyaporn R.

A passenger was confused when he ordered a taxi but the meter was already running when the car arrived. The driver stated he had to drive far and therefore turned on the meter from his location to the pickup spot. The meter was already at 83 THB when the passenger got inside. The driver’s service was terrible with fast driving and complaining throughout the trip. A TikTok user posted a video showing evidence that the meter was on before the service started. The driver complained that there are so many problems and he wants to stop accepting passengers from applications.

Khaosod Online talked to Nas on 3 February 2023. Nas stated the incident took place on the 1st at 21.00. He called a taxi to pick him up at Bang Yai District in Nonthaburi Province to Pracharat. After booking on the app he received a call from the taxi. The driver stated, “I am at Srisawan Hospital, do you want to wait or not?”. Nas stated he will wait and the taxi arrived after 15-20 minutes. He got in the vehicle and saw that the meter was at 83 THB. Nas asked, “Uncle, will you restart the meter or not?”. The driver answered that he had to drive far to reach the pickup spot. Inside the app, the fee for the ride was estimated at 260 THB. Nas informed the taxi that it isn’t right to turn on the meter before he was even inside the taxi.

He also stated that the price inside the application was an estimate and not the final price. He cannot start the meter from where he left from but can ask for 20 THB as a booking fee as the app states. The driver did not like hearing this but he restarted the meter. He drove fast and complained all the way to the destination. As they neared the destination Nas asked to transfer the fare fee but the driver yelled at him stating he had no bank account. Nas then asked to park the vehicle for an ATM. The fare turned out to be 160 THB. what do you think about this incident and has this happened to you?

Last time I flew into BKK the taxi driver proposed "500 baht include tolls"

I said no way, use the meter.

We got stuck in traffic and the ride took an hour and a half and meter plus tolls plus airport surcharge ran me 560 baht.
