Time for the money thing again? How much are you spending these days?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Time for the money thing again? How much are you spending these days?

Post by Kung-fu Hillbilly »

With the money spend question often of interest to many, and what with not having polled on it since before "the great sickening", I thought perhaps those of you left on the ground could let the rest of us know what sort of money you're going through at the moment.

Perhaps some might also like to comment on whether they're experiencing any significant increase in the cost of living post covid.

Results from pre-covid poll.

Family of three with two cats and a dog, we spend about $1300 a month but that can easily get out of control with short trips. We're able to put back a decent amount every month so it's fine, could definitely be saving more as I know some expat families living on under 700 and still enjoying their time here.

Family of four, with an addition of a fifth to support studies. Plus two dogs, two puppies and a bunch of chicken. We don't pay rent because we have our own place to stay. Pay for electricity and schools though. And medical insurance and one or two trips to Europe every year.
The amount we spend on local food increased about 15% during the last year. Travels up 30-40%, that's why we cancelled our intended trip in April. We spend about 1500 a month.

just to note that the average YEARLY income of cambodian citizen is roughly 2000-3000 US$. You will find stats that are even well below those figures.

spending less for the 2 of us in Phuket, eating better and enjoying it more than living in Kep
Rented out the house in Kep so offsets the rent here

Wife makes 3x -4x what she made in kep as well :-)

I'm quite sure I've read many times that on a global scale, most white, working, western men are usually in the top 5% of earners, - globally being the operative word here - even though most of us may feel as if we earn a modest wage.

Some of us may feel like we struggle at times, but there are plenty of people who are really struggling. Living in Cambodia makes this all the more poignant.

Yes, many Cambodians struggle financially in day to day life. It's one of the reasons we have a Cambodian living in with us to support the studies But I don't think that's the scope of this poll.
