Thoughts as an Expat in Cambodia raising a family (khmer family ) ....

Obviously the salary in Cambodia isn't the best , (not bad if you're a lonely backpacker frapping in your shack) ....
But as a family man you've got the responsibilities .....Cambodian salary pays half if not a quarter of what one gets back home ...so 6 months working in the home country and 6 months here could be more profitable ..BUT less time with the family , which is shite ...

Anyone in the same boat ??

Only thing I can think of , is to find a gig part time here online before one goes back to work in (country probably $1k pm) ....and throwing small amounts of cash bit by bit in a few investment (stocks ETFs etc ).... maybe the odd bit of crypto

when banking the cash in the home country

This is actually pretty difficult. At first glance life in Cambodia seems to be relatively cheap but that quickly changes once the kids go to school. Free schooling is close to useless and not really free and private education can be pretty expensive when taking local salaries into consideration.
Your best bet would be to somehow make a Western salary (online?) and spend it here.
Another option could be to move away from Phnom Penh. Private education tends to be a fair bit cheaper outside the capital and so are the cost of a house. Unfortunately local salaries follow the same pattern

Why anyone (Western) in their right mind would send their children to school in Cambodia is beyond me, but maybe I'm missing something? Government schools are shite and private schools are a ripoff.

I don't plan to have children, but if it should happen by accident, I'd ship them off to stay with my sis in my home country once they need schooling. They'll thank me later.

I have two children under the age of ten and a wife, we go through 1k a month without vacations, 2k with weekend trips. I haven't found a school suitable to my standards, (they're low, American public school low) and once they reach the 1st grade going year we're heading off to the states.

I'd make more money there and the wife has family + mine there. I pray for the man who sends his children to school here willingly, I checked out several schools here and they wouldn't even be able to teach me as an adult. Unless you're able to pay 40k a semester for a child at a quality school, I'd second guess raising a child here.

Edit - I'd also like to mention we live in Kampong Cham with the fortnight trip to pp so we're able to stock up on goods we can't find here.

It's about $16,000 per month to break even with 3 children and normal life expectations.
Such jobs are available, but not for Barry, the bus driver from Birmingham.

16.000 $ ? You mean 1600 $ right ?

Not sure what to say. Some of this seems to be the problems of affluence versus family. For me. family stays together or it's not family. Education for your kids? Parents are the inspiration, teachers are the mechanics, not the same league. So, either all here or all go back, but then you're there, not here. You wanna be there?

I don't get your post. There is no school I know of in the country that costs 40k a semester. Even ISPP costs less than that per annum.

I have friends living abroad and planning to return home, not because they really want to, but because they have kids and they're thinking of their education. One friend has already made the move and he's putting on a brave face but he'd rather not be there.

This thread made me wonder, is correspondence school/home learning through a school back home (wherever your home may be) a viable option for those living abroad?
