Why aren't there any real taxis in Sihanoukville?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Sinville has its pros and cons, if you just concentrate on the cons thats all you will see, i prefer living there than i do PP or SR, it has a lot more to offer for me, has a lot more and better bars than SR, the local nightclub LV is probably the best nigtclub in Cambodia, youve got the option of the beach to chill out in the day time etc, i prefer smaller cities so it suits me down to the ground, never get any bad traffic etc..
dont get me wrong though it has a hella lot of problems, but so does PP and SR

I don't think anyone's trying to judge people who choose Sihanoukville. Heck, for a lot of people easy access to cheap whores and drugs is a pro not a con. If the place went a little more upmarket rather than endlessly chasing the lowest common denominator - it could even be quite pleasant. Alas, Otres is as much as a dump as the resorts of preference were before it... and given that they're now quoting more to buy a Condo in Snooky (off plan) than a Condo in Thailand (already built - pick up the keys and walk in), I can't see how it will ever really take off.

As an overflow for the cross-border industrial zone it may have a future but as a tourist destination, Snooky looks doomed in the long run... with Vietnam, Myanmar, and Thailand offering significantly nicer options for less cash (though with more expensive hookers and far fewer drugs in most cases).

You had me until that last paragraph. I've been all over the beach resorts of Thailand and VN and no place is nearly as cheap as SV. Most of the beach towns in VN suck IMO. I'd much rather be in Snook. Just the opposite in Thailand, every beach resort is far better - sans Pattaya.

Silk Air are Charter flights. If they were going to fly into Snooky on a serious basis, why not do it with a schedule? Why? Again the Vietnam Air monopoly to fly over Snooky to their island 50km away. They don't want to bring people in to spend money in Cambodia unless they get a cut. Airasia tried to negotiate flights in here a couple years ago but were blocked with high "fees." Once there are flights to Singapore, PP, Kuala Lumper, Bangkok, Ko Samui, Snooky and the islands will be a real tourist destination, until then, an also ran with a 4 hour ride on the "Highway To Hell" #4.

"No Casinos near the beach on Ko Samui, lets fly to Sihanoukville." (future thoughts of tourists.)

Bayon Air is offering regularly scheduled Sihanokville to/from PP and SR. SR every day. PP twice a week. Only $35 to PP. Less with special deals. Half the price it was back in the 90s.

Bayon Air: Fly Chinese copies of a shit Russian turboprop airplane (AN-24), They cannot fly in Australia, New Zealand, America, Canada and Europe. Bayon is is backed by the Chinese and has 30 of those lovely airplanes on order. I'd rather have bowel surgery in the jungle with a stick than chance flying in one of those Chinese pieces of cr*p. They will bring Chinese tourists to Snooky though. Just look at the new hotel/casino going up by the Victory Hill intersection. Big sign in Chinese.

True. Nevertheless there are regularly scheduled flights to Sihanoukville. And by a non Viet company. You aren't limited to buses. I don't like flying on those things either. But I've flown on the same and worse here. I've found maintainence, inspection and certification of the aircraft here in Cambodia as or more concerning than the aircraft. I figure that works the same as everything here, with greasy palms and knock off parts.

taxi is the best way to get from PP to SHV, door to door service in 4hours ive got one guy that takes us for $45 cant go wrong really, during new year we actually went from SHV to PP in 3 hours, was a new record, got to near the bus station exactly to the minute, i think with PP being a ghost town due to the new year you didnt hit any of that traffic after the airport

I made it home from PNH in an hour & 45 once. I don't think I've even done it in 3 hours any other time. The guy drove fast but not crazy somehow. No blind corners. Unfortunately, I have no clue which card in a stack of 20 is his.
