Look out, here they come!
Re: Look out, here they come!
Posting this before I go and actively look for articles or studies into the effects of a flu pandemic in cities with terrible air pollution.
Given air pollution has been linked to a variety of respiratory and cardiovascular health problems, these problems could be exacerbated by the flu, potentially leading to more serious complications or even death. Thus overwhelming health services.
Edit to add the article that popped up at No.1 on google.

Re: Look out, here they come!
I have lived in China for a few years and left 2007. The air pollution in most cities was already incredibile back then (and not sure it has improved since). When I left I thought there would be millions of respiratory related issues (and deaths) in the the future. Covid could have a much greater impact in those already heavily attacked lungs.IraHayes wrote: ↑Thu Dec 29, 2022 4:35 pm Posting this before I go and actively look for articles or studies into the effects of a flu pandemic in cities with terrible air pollution.

Ministry of Health has no plans to restrict Chinese entry into Cambodia
Wednesday, December 28, 2022
Dr. Ly Sovann, spokesman for the Ministry of Health and director of the Department of Infectious Diseases, said on the afternoon of December 28 that, recently, after the Chinese government abandoned the implementation of the Covid-19 protective measures, the infection rate in China has skyrocketed.
He said that some countries, such as Japan, have therefore introduced restrictions on the conditions of entry of Chinese nationals into their country, but the Cambodian Ministry of Health does not have a policy to restrict Chinese people to come to Cambodia yet, that is, they must apply like any other foreigners.

Of course he went quiet - his pontifications were outdated and lacking reason.
This backwater of his has 2000 ppl attending an outdoor event tomorrow between Kampot and Kep where HE, the Chinese Ambassador and the Governors of Kep and Kampot are to announce funding for a new 4 lane road between the 2 provinces - work has already been well underway. The new 4/6 lane road between Kep and the Vietnamese border has already been shaped and ready for paving along the coast some 20km. Apart from aberrations like building a city and international airport in a National Park, a 42 story monstrosity in the middle of a proposed Unesco World Heritage site that would generate billions of income , among numerous other examples, there are some quite progressive programs underway. The new 2km beach down the Kampot river, the marina and beach area in town, the 5k beach front in Kep etc. Some old moaners who truly epitomize their avatars wallow in the past yet happily spew nonsense about something they glimpsed at years ago.

To be fair to JB there has always been a bias against Kampot on this forum. He's not the only one to have put the place down. That said he can come across as very blunt and no nonsense.
And all these sweet deals that you speak of will fill old lovely Kampot up with Chinese before you can say Shitsville. Enjoy while you can.
Which is kinda part of his point.

The new middle class has thrived since 2007 and now most families own at least one car, whereas before everyone used public transport - the air got a lot worse because of it.truffledog wrote: ↑Thu Dec 29, 2022 4:51 pmI have lived in China for a few years and left 2007. It's as you say, hospitals are packed on a bad pollution day with respiratory cases. Flu season (now), which often coincides with bad pollution days puts a lot more pressure on the health system. The last thing a hospital needs is hundreds of COVID cases adding to the problem.

Yes tied into the 35k house being developed on the Bokor concession - I never could work out where these buyers would come from as the climate is woeful and there is no employment options there. But throw in a huge market, 10ha organic/hydro vegie farm, organic free range poultry/pig/sheep, 4 golf courses, 5 lakes, 3 casinos, zipline and recreational parks, etc etc and sell a 3 bedroom villa in a cool climate exotic location to ppl living in highrise 30m2 apartments in HK/S'pore/KL/BKG/ Hanoi/HCMC/Taipei/G'zhou/ etc for a 3-4 hour flight and a property for less than 100k? Thats his market and it makes sense only if you have an International airport ala PQ. Khmer alone wont be economic but that model is.truffledog wrote: ↑Fri Dec 30, 2022 1:00 amA new international airport for Kep and Kampot only?kgbagent wrote: ↑Fri Dec 30, 2022 12:43 amOf course he went quiet - his pontifications were outdated and lacking reason.

Re: Look out, here they come!
That airport will never happen. Kampot/Bokor and Kep area is way too small for a regional airport. But Sihanoukville airport would be only 1-1,5 hours away if they would fix the road and widen it same way as they did NR3 from Phnom Penh.kgbagent wrote: ↑Fri Dec 30, 2022 2:13 amYes tied into the 35k house being developed on the Bokor concession - I never could work out where these buyers would come from as the climate is woeful and there is no employment options there. KLers already have their own Bokor, Genting Highlands. Under hour from KL. The area development actually have similar background to modern days Bokor. When the Genting started to develop everybody said the developer is stupid, who would buy anything from there. Now the property prices have actually skyrocketed, which is somewhat rare in SEA, and the place is packed every weekend.

The road from Snooky becomes irrelevant if you can fly direct into the equivalent of Genting from multiple countries, not just Malaysia, and only an hours flight more from KL. It has nothing to do with a regional airport as Cambodia is too small to justify it unlike PQ where Viet domestic tourism is huge. Imagine that Bokor offers similar to PQ with similar visa arrangments, ASEAN exempt obviously, and the numbers add up.
