Team Cambodia Wins the EAS Hackathon in Jakarta

TEMPO.CO, Jakarta - The East Asia Summit or EAS Hackathon in Jakarta, December 12-16, 2022, determined team Cambodia as the winner. The Hackathon with the theme " "Combating Marine Plastic" was attended by all 13 teams from EAS member countries, namely: Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Thailand and Vietnam.

The Cambodian team consist of 2 members, Chanrithisak Phok and Bunnet Phoung, who build a customer loyalty-based application that enables the consumer to reduce plastic use. This application is connected to a variety of merchants ranging from culinary to daily necessities.

Every consumer who purchases from these merchants without using plastic can scan the QR code to receive points. The points then can be exchanged for appealing prizes provided in the application.

In their statement, Chanrithisak Phok and Bunnet Phoung are excited to be able to present their ideas to the forum of the ASEAN Foundation and the organizer of the hackathon. Phoc added that the application they created was inspired by data from the food and beverage business which contributes 31 percent to plastic waste pollution in the sea.

"The CSIRO incubator program and network that we acquire will help develop the application further so it can have an impact on society and the environment," he said in a written statement.

The main winner of the EAS Hackathon receives a cash prize of USD$7,000. In addition to a chance in presenting at an important forum, and participating in the CSIRO Center for Plastic innovation Incubator program (Institute for Scientific and Industrial Research in Australia). The Hackathon continuation of the EAS Marine Plastic Debris Workshop was organized by The Asia Foundation (TAF), ASEAN Foundation, and CSIRO.
