It may be cultural. Even the villagers believe grass and trees are bad and should be removed and paved over with concrete.
Just my opinions, of course.

I've seen that attitude elsewhere in Asia.newkidontheblock wrote: ↑Sat Dec 17, 2022 11:50 pm It may be cultural. Even the villagers believe grass and trees are bad and should be removed and paved over with concrete.

I think it's something to do with the idea that poor people (peasants - no face - lower class) live in the country alongside snakes, unpleasant insects, and predatory animals that snatch your kids when they go out at night to shit, whereas those with money (higher class - more face) live in developed areas safe from the bitey things and get to look down on the peasants.
If your family were subsistence farmers a generation ago you probably don't see much value in a holiday destination that doesn't have concrete, neon lights, KTV places etc.

In developed countries fast food and coffee chains are often derided for their uniformity and lowest common denominator aesthetics, whereas for those who grew up or live with muddy feet they are wonderlands of concrete, plastic and electricity. Shopping malls fill a similar niche on a larger scale.Random Dude wrote: ↑Sun Dec 18, 2022 3:32 am

Where the more affluent may see cultural sterility others find security and hygiene. The rich may want to get back to nature: the poor are often striving to get away from it.

Grassy / lush areas like this attract all kinds of animals you wouldn't like around the house, especially when there's a few toddlers stumbling around. Preferably you have some cleared land / concrete between those areas and your house so the dogs can intercept the bitey ones.

By Dy Bunnara
According to the Koh Kong provincial administration, 17 of the 35 islands belonging to Koh Kong province have received investment projects.
In a speech given by Ms. Mithona Phu Thong, Governor of Koh Kong Province on January 17, 2023, she stated that Koh Kong Province has 35 small and large islands, including 17 islands which already have investment projects from nine different companies.
Koh Kong is a province with great potential for natural resources. The province has the longest coastline, including many islands that can be developed to serve tourism.
In recent years, the government has focused on rehabilitating infrastructure, especially a new airport development project in Botum Sakor district, which is under construction, and will be completed and put into operation in the near future, which will promote further economic development to this maritime province,

Looks like they're busy building some beaches there.
That's great! Kill off the natural eco-systems.
It'll be so much better after they get rid of those mangroves too.
Nobody wants to see natural flora and fauna anymore. You can see all that stuff online anyway.

It just does not look right until they cut down all the trees. Mission accomplished.
