Indonesian Men Appeal Short Sentences for Extortion
Cambodian News, (Phnom Penh): The Phnom Penh Municipal Court of Appeal this morning, December 14, 2022, held a hearing on the appeals of two Indonesian defendants in connection with a case of illegal detention and forced labor in Sangkat Srah Chak, Khan Daun Penh, Phnom Penh and Sangkat Toul Sangke I, Khan Russey Keo, Phnom Penh during 2021.
Ky Rithy, President of the Trial Chamber, stated that the two men before the court are RODY GUNAWAN, a 33-year-old Indonesian national, and HENDRA CAHYADI, 32 years old, also Indonesian.
In this case, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court on July 22, 2022 sentenced the first-named RODY GUNAWAN to 2 years and 6 months imprisonment, and HENDRA CAHYADI was sentenced to one year and two months in prison on the charges of "unlawful detention and coercion with aggravating circumstances" under Article 254 of the Penal Code. They had detained a fellow Indonesian and were extorting money from his family for his release. The two men were arrested on September 10, 2021 in Srah Chak, Daun Penh, Phnom Penh and Tuol Sangke I, Russey Keo, Phnom Penh.
In this case, the Phnom Penh Municipal Court of Appeal has postponed the announcement of the appeal verdict until the morning of December 26, 2022.

The Phnom Penh Municipal Court of Appeal upheld the verdict of the Phnom Penh Municipal Court, but changed their sentence from one year and two months to two years and six months in prison each. And pave the way for the accused to appeal to the Supreme Court in accordance with legal procedures.
