If you had a gun and were in fear of your life would you submit to be being beaten and robbed/possibly seriously injured or killed because shooting people is a crime- or shoot the attackers?

Sure BUT the man wasn't being attacked, he saw what was going on and pulled his gun firing into the air thinking ( mistakenly) they would run off,
they didn't
then he shot them

if he had NOT taken his gun out........

The article states they came to attack him after he fired a shot in the air . . .

As to what would have happened had he not taken his gun out - maybe not much - or maybe they would have stabbed the other guys they were allegedly chasing to death? We don't know as we weren't there

Yes, unless you are an on-duty member of the security forces you cannot shoot anyone for any reason.
