11 Beaches Named Beautiful Beaches for 2022

Cambodia has named 11 beaches in three coastal provinces as the beautiful beaches for 2022.

The award ceremony took place in Sihanoukville, Preah Sihanouk province on Dec. 8 under the presidency of H.E. Tith Chantha, Secretary of State at the Ministry of Tourism, during a workshop on strengthening the tourism service quality toward the 9th Sea Festival.

According to the Ministry of Tourism, the 11 beaches have been selected from 27 candidates, of which 6 in Kep province, 5 in Koh Kong province, and 16 in Preah Sihanouk province.

Six of the 11 selected beaches – Kep and Koh Tonsay in Kep, and Sokha, O’ Chheu Teal, O’Tres and Thansur in Preah Sihanouk – were rated “very good” while 5 others – Koang Kang in Koh Kong, and Ekareach, Soksan, Rong and Prasat in Preah Sihanouk were classified as “intermediate”.

Cambodia is organising the Sea Festival and the 2022 World Congress of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club (World-Bays Club) in Sihanoukville from Dec. 8 to 14.

The Kingdom’s coastline stretches about 450 kilometres in four provinces – Preah Sihanouk, Koh Kong, Kampot and Kep. It became a member of the World-Bays Club in mid-2011.

Wow, that was fast. Smelly Occheuteal Beach becomes pristine O’ Chheu Teal Beach, one of Cambodia's most beautiful beaches, in only a matter of weeks, so I guess they fixed the toilets.
Good work guys. They deserve a medal. (Oh yeah, they got an award for a "very good" beach.)

At a Sihanoukville Beach, Stinky Wastewater Flows Into the Sea

Foul-smelling wastewater is draining into the sea at Sihanoukville’s O’Chheuteal beach, leaving visitors plugging their noses and a local business owner and tourism official concerned that the stink will scare off tourists.

People began smelling a strong stench from wastewater flowing into the sea after a new sewer drainage system was built earlier this year, said Mean, a beach restaurant owner who only gave her given name due to fears of reprisal.

“The patrons always asked, ‘where does the smell come from?’ when they arrived, and I told them that it was from a sewer nearby and they saw, so they know,” she said. “My mother used to tell the relevant authorities who came to see this sewer but they just made a report to the upper level and there’s no solution so far.”

The sewer was built in March this year and the foul smell got worse in June, Mean said.

A CamboJA reporter visited the site in October 2021 and saw what appeared to be raw sewage flowing from nearby public toilets directly into the sea. Last week, CamboJA reporters observed the new drainage system built near the restrooms — and smelled the foul odor of the wastewater draining into the sea.

PM HE Proposes “No Plastic Bag” Initiative to World Bay Club Members

Phnom Penh (FN), Dec. 10 – Cambodian prime minister HE proposed “no plastic bag” initiative to members of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World Club.

The premier spoke during his meeting with the club delegation on Saturday morning (Dec 10) at Sokha Beach Resort, Preah Sihanouk Province.

In the meeting, Samdech also expressed his commitment to abide by all the conditions set by the club.

Premier HE underlined that becoming a club member clearly reflects a new turning point for a better change in Cambodia’s coastal areas in terms of socio-economic, tourism, urbanization and environmental aspects, which are the determining factors for international recognition of Cambodia Bay.

Cambodia Committed to Improve Bay Cleanliness

Cambodia was committed to do its best to further improve the cleanliness of its bays as a member of the Most Beautiful Bays in the World (World-Bays Club) so as to increase its attractiveness to tourists.

The commitment was made by H.E. Thong Khon, Cambodian Minister of Tourism, while presiding over the opening ceremony of the International Conference on Bay Development and Conservation in Sihanoukville, Preah Sihanouk province yesterday afternoon, as part of the World Bays-Club’s 16th World Congress taking place in the province from Dec. 9 to 14.

Mr. Michel BUJOLD, President of the World-Bays Club, was also present on the occasion, along with the participation from the Club’s delegates and many national and international guests.

The main consideration is to make sure that the water flowing into the sea must be clean, H.E. Minister underlined. [YES!!! This.]

Got a t-shirt of this nice organisation that has its logo built into those concrete monuments on Ocheteal, on the Kampot roundabout near Rusty Keyhole and Royal Rowing Club, near the ferry to Koh Tonsay - and probably more I never noticed.
