Bye bye Bali: Indonesia to criminalize sex outside marriage

Yeah, that place out 'there'. Anything not really Cambodia related should go here.

There are many drafts that ended up in the trash bin.
I remember when they drafted a law requesting a deposit of 100.000 $ or so in a muslim bank in order to marry a local. Never went beyond that, Local women immediately responded they weren't to be sold.

From one extreme to another, so is the life of Indonesian law drafts.

Common sense and religion are polar opposites. The moment common sense is applied to religious fairy stories, upon which the entire edifice is founded upon, people will see right through it.

This is just a lot of old men with big grey beards and silly hats telling everyone what to do, in the name of [insert name of fictional character here].

Your idea of non-locals being exempt is a good one, it will solve the tourist issue and also allow them to oppress their own people at the same time; Win-Win. Let's see if the tourist shilling is more persuasive than God.

Yes, hard to take anything seriously that comes out of the gob of an Indonesian lawmaker.

What's the problem?

Just become Islamic for the duration of your visit. Marry up to three or four women and then divorce them before going home. Does it mention anything about monogamy? Simply a marriage of convenience for all involved.

I am not sure how many of you have been to Indonesia.... I cycled from Bali across Lombok Sumbawa and Flores before taking a boat to Timor... And flying back to Bali later... In 2019...

First thing, Bali is its own world, with oodles of super-rich expats from around the world doing as they please. Then, you have a lot of tourism. I visited the summer of 2019, just 6 months before COVID... What a zoo the small islands off Lombok's northwest coast! Hoards of young Euros, Aussies, and deeply tanned middle-aged Western women banging local boys for months on the beaches... Likewise, oodles of older white men with young Indo women everywhere, all the time. The usual foreign couples on dream vacations, and a lot of pretty white girls slipping out of the hostel all night to the rich foreign mens' private parties...

Do you imagine a law can change all that? No way. Bali and the tourist islands will stay the same... No matter what "law" is passed, lol...

Outside that touristic bubble-land, Indonesia has always been ultra-conservative, so these laws will make almost zero difference, except to the progressive youth in Jakarta, who are protesting... In Timor and Flores, there are a lot of Christians, but they are also very traditional and conservative, evangelicals and Catholics both...

This law seems to be real. Hmmm.

Indonesia bans sex outside marriage as parliament passes sweeping new criminal code

https://www.cnn.com/2022/12/05/asia/ind ... index.html

I wonder if this will touch Bali, the Gili Islands and Labuan Bajo? Doubt it.

BUT does not come into effect for 3 years!!!
The new criminal code will not come into effect for another three years and also includes a ban on insulting the president and speaking out against state ideology.

Protesters staged small rallies outside the parliament in Jakarta this week.

The code - which will apply to both Indonesians and foreigners - includes several "morality" laws which make it illegal for unmarried couples to live together and have sex.
..................
A previous draft of the code was set to be passed in 2019 but sparked nationwide protests with tens of thousands taking part in demonstrations.

Many, including students, took to the streets and there were clashes with police in the capital Jakarta.

It was promulgated in 2019, so that is the "3 years"... Times up. So, it appears to be coming into effect NOW. Pending other little changes to the final draft.

Only one hundred protestors on the street this week, as opposed to 10 thousand a few years ago... What's happening to Indonesians?
