Cambodia News On 1 December 2022, a female student was stabbed to death by a man in her rented room located near Western University in Village 2, Sangkat Veal Vong, Kampong Cham City Province. The victim was identified as 20-year-old Viet Chantra, a second-year student at Western University.


The owner of the house said that at about 3 am on 1 December 2022, he heard some shouting inside the rented room. He went down to see what was going on, and he saw blood all over the room, so he hurried to lock the outside gate to prevent the attacker from running away. Then while the killer tried to unsuccessfully escape through the roof, the landlord called the police to the scene immediately.

The prime murder suspect is 20-year-old Yeu Meng Chheak, who lives in Damnak Ampil village, Steng Chey commune, Cheung Prey district, Kampong Cham province. On his Facebook account, the assailant could be seen wearing Royal Gendarmarie uniforms, but police confirmed that that wasn’t his real occupation, which remains unknown for the moment.

During the arrest interrogation, the killer told police that he knew the woman victim ever since they were at Pring Chrum Secondary School together in 2019. The man admitted to the police that he did indeed stab the victim to death. The reason for the murder was that the victim did not agree to have sex with him after they met by chance and went back to the victim’s room together.

But I am still shocked - I'm shocked by the sheer stupidity and entitlement of the man's motive for taking a woman's life (OMG she doesn't want to have sex with ME), by the scale of the violence he used to punish and hurt her (no sex for ME? then I will stab you to death), and perhaps, most of all, it is shocking how often we read about this type of violence in Cambodia news, and how "banal' it is to hear that someone (usually a woman) has been killed yet again because of jealousy, or for simply refusing to have sex.

I wonder what living in a room 4*4 meters on the minimum wage long term does to people.

Guys slashing a girl's face, acid attacks, beatings, murders etc because of a bruised ego are probably more common around the world than we realise. I have a very close female friend who is always getting unwanted attention from creepy weirdos, it gives me the shits knowing there are sick arseholes like that out there.
