Remains of 49 Cambodian Soldiers to be Repatriated in Gold Coffins
Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On 30 November 2022, HE Eng Hy spokesman for the National Gendarmerie said that tomorrow, on 1 December 2022, the remains of 49 Cambodian National Rescue Armed Forces fighters will be repatriated to Cambodia in gold coffins after being honoured in ceremonies in Vietnam. The hand over of the 49 deceased fighters will occur at the X-16 border under watch of His Excellency General Sao Sokha.
Then on 2 December, the 49 coffins will be cremated in the presence of Samdech Pichey Sena and the ashes will be placed in an urn at the Great Stupa monument.
It should be noted that the construction of the Great Stupa was built at a cost of more than USD 700,000 in order to store the remains of the 49 fighters.
More than 44 years have passed since 49 of Cambodia’s fighters sacrificed their lives in Vietnam during the internal conflict and Vietnamese friends have gathered to set up a monument to Cambodian martyrs. The local authority of the Vietnamese people in Dong Nai province and the Vietnamese army, especially the 7th Army, Division 302, took good care of the deceased.
Taking this historically significant opportunity, on behalf of the Technical Working Group of the Inter-Ministerial Commission, General Sao Sokha expressed his deepest gratitude to the Technical Working Group of the Ministry of Defense of Vietnam, 7th Military Region, Division 302, authorities and the people of Dong Nai Province, who provided good cooperation for the process of repatriation of the remains of the Cambodian Armed Forces, the National Salvation Army.
Although the remains of the 49 fighters were repatriated, in order to preserve the historical site and the values of Vietnam-Cambodia friendship at the request of the Cambodian side, the Vietnamese will continue to preserve the area as a historical heritage for tourism researchers and as a reminder of the continuing Cambodian-Vietnamese friendship.
