Cambodia News, (Battambang Province): On November 21, 2022, a rare wild serow (a goat-like, antelope- like mammal, genus Capricornis**)was rescued by the rangers of Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary and local people after being trapped by hunters, injuring its leg, and falling into a ravine. "It's being kept under guard by park officials." This is the statement made by HE Net Pheaktra, Secretary of State and Spokesperson of the Ministry of Environment on November 22, 2022. His Excellency said that this morning, on November 22, that a team of veterinarians from the Wildlife Alliance was on their way to rescue the injured animal.

His Excellency Neth Pheaktra, Secretary of State and Spokesman for the Ministry of Environment, stated that the serow is an extremely rare species in the world and their presence in protected areas in Cambodia is important for the conservation of biodiversity in Cambodia, as well as for the whole world.

His Excellency stated that the researchers did not have the exact data on the number of these mammals living in Cambodia due to their rarity. Breeding occurs between October and December, and after seven months of gestation they give birth to one offspring (or more rarely, twins), which remain with the mother for almost a year before becoming independent.
The serows are hunted for their horns and their bones.

They have a few of them down at Phnom Tamao. They are weird looking, like a cross between a deer and a mountain goat.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

This is the statement of Mr. Neth Pheaktra, Secretary of State and spokesman for the Ministry of Environment on the night of November 22 : "The Ministry of Environment would like to thank the rangers and the people for their cooperation in rescuing this rare mammmal. Many thanks also to the Joint Wildlife Rescue Team and the WA Veterinarians for saving this female, who would have died due to her Injuries and the miscarriage".

Mr. Pheaktra also called on the public to stop eating wild animals and stop trapping, hunting and selling all wildlife. He said: Do not believe that skin, bone, flesh or blood samples from wild animals will promote health or cure diseases, because on the contrary, instead it leads to health hazards and danger to humans because the flesh of wild animals is full of viruses.
"Wildlife has universal value for the environment and the ecosystem," he said. Wildlife also has the potential to attract tourists through eco-tourism, which is Cambodia's green gold. Preserving forests and wildlife is an important basis for supporting economic growth through eco-tourism.

Camera traps snapped this serow in a protected area on May 29. - ENVIRONMENT MINISTRY

PHNOM PENH (The Phnom Penh Post/Asia News Network): Ministry of Environment spokesman Neth Pheaktra displayed a photograph of a rare Sumatran serow (Capricornis sumatraensis sumatraensis), also known as the southern serow, that was captured by a camera trap in one of the kingdom’s protected areas.

Pheaktra said that the southern serow is listed on the IUCN Red List as a globally endangered species and in the CITES appendix I.

No precise data on the Cambodian population is available, but the species’ rarity suggests it has among the least dense population of the Kingdom’s animals.

He declined to specify where the image was captured in order to protect the wild population.

Pheaktra described the serow as a black and grey quadruped, which stands almost a metre tall at the shoulder and can weigh up to 140kg. The goat-like animal has short horns and feeds in the early morning or early evening.
