Monkey Business: Mean Monkeys are Attacking People Near Santhormok School

Post by CEOCambodiaNews »

Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On the morning of 16 November 2022, three monkeys on the Santhormok junction pedestrian bridge reportedly attacked four to five students, causing the students injuries. According to local residents, one of the students was sent to hospital after suffering from serious injuries from the monkey attack.

It is believed that these three rogue monkeys have escaped from Wat Phnom and are roaming around Phnom Penh, attacking people. Besides the students, the monkeys ambushed other people who were crossing the flyover at the Santhor Mok traffic light, and users of the bridge have requested relevant authorities to take action to catch the monkeys and put them in a zoo.

Local villagers said that in the past, they have seen the monkeys in other places, such as around the Vanda Accounting School near the Chinese Embassy and scavanging around the Old Market, but the monkeys only stole a bit of food from a small number of traders, but never injured or attacked anyone. This time, however, the monkeys were showing their teeth, seemed fierce, and were frightening people.

In relation to this issue, the local authority of Tuol Kork district said that on Wednesday afternoon, 16 November 2022, officials were sent out to remove the monkeys that day for safety of the people, and that they will search and remove monkeys from other places in the area too.

Anyone know what type of monkeys these "mean monkeys" are ?

Got me thinking about this : newsworthy/cambodian-director-wildlife- ... 52314.html
Which, in turn, made me wonder about where they really take the naughty, nasty monkeys when they get rounded up and taken away because they are pissing people off. You know, those monkeys that steal your shit, who hang out in cities or wats or tourist spots, and some of them are a nuisance, or even (sometimes) dangerous to humans, because they are no longer afraid of people. And every so often, somebody sends in the rangers to "take the monkeys away to a wildlife sanctuary". Which sounds good in theory, but many of them are "city monkeys", born and bred in Wat Phnom or Angkor Wat, Siem Reap, or on Independence Beach Road in Sihanoukville. When you have been making a living by amusing the tourists or stealing their stuff, how are you supposed to adapt to the jungle where nobody will feed you bananas and there are no backpackers ?

Anyhoo, that was just my random train of thought brought on by the recent news about Cambodian monkeys.

There are women who sell bananas to visitors at the rescue center to feed the mpnkeys. There are very few backpackers there or anywhere in the country but the world keeps turning.

Maybe some enterprising government minister to help relocate them?

So they are the same type that are being trafficked then. No conclusions, but that's interesting. They are worth $$$.
From the other thread about monkey business.
The macaques were taken from national parks and other protected areas in Cambodia to breeding facilities where they were provided false export permits, officials said. Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries officials received cash payments of $220 each in exchange for a collection quota of 3,000 "unofficial" monkeys.

Yes, they are one of the most popular species for animal experiments. There are also Stump-tailed Macaques and Northern Pig-tailed Macaques here too but not around Phnom Penh. Only the Long-tailed are considered endangered, which seems strange because they are the ones we see most.

It's this trade which is endangering them.

Indeed, the increase in the capture of wild primates mirrors the rise in the export of farmed macaques. The number exported by Cambodia to the USA almost tripled in two years, from 6,562 in 2018 to 19,582 in 2020.

In 2018, Mauritius exported 2,649 macaques which rose to 7,234 in 2020. Laos announced a 2022 export quota of 6,000, up from 3000, and the 2021 Indonesia quota was set at 2070 wild macaques. Authorities have confirmed the 2022 quota is postponed pending population surveys.

Macaques exported for research are transported in small transit crates and endure journeys of up to 48 hours as cargo on planes. In 2021, several monkeys died on a Wamos Air flight from Cambodia to the USA.
