In order to reduce cybercrime, protect individual’s data and the public and private institutions of Cambodia, a cyber security law has been drafted by the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications.

Like the whole world, Cambodia faces threats from hackers. In order to protect cyber security and fight cybercrime, the government is going great efforts to establish a national cyber security infrastructure and recruit specialists to monitor cyberattacks.

At the same time, the ministry drafted the law on cyber security and protection of personal data.

“We have drafted a comprehensive law on cyber security, but we need more input and comments from the private sector and other public institutions. We are now waiting for responses, and then we will review them at an inter-ministerial meeting,” said ministry spokesman Liv Sophanarith.

He added that the ministry had sent the draft to many parties, especially large internet providers, so they can help review the law.

“The draft law is still being revised. As with preparations for any new law, we have to go through all relevant institutions,” he said.

A team from the ministry was tasked with drafting the law, which was then sent to various ministries, institutions and relevant parties.

The ministry has received a series of inputs and suggestions and will continue to accept them until November 15.

An inter-ministerial meeting will then be scheduled to discuss the comments and decide which points should be modified, and which require additional input.

In addition to the draft law on cyber security, the ministry also completed drafting of the National Policy for the Development of the Digital Sector, a draft law on the postal service and the first draft of the law on personal data protection. The ministry is also preparing a draft Cloud First Policy, according to a November 4 press release from the ministry.
