Decline of the Press in Cambodia

Post by orichá »

The headline of Nov. 3rd's Khmer
Times
editorial reads, "Sam Rainsy: a political crook"

...and the first sentence... "Sam Rainsy is the 'Charlie Brown' of politics, a character who fails in everything he does...."

https://www.khmertimeskh.com/501178884/ ... cal-crook/

Well, irrespective of what is true or not true, or what we really know or don't know about Sam Rainsy, this article exemplifies the stilted, rock-bottom low to which the press in Cambodia has descended since the forced demise of "The Cambodia Daily" and the sale of "The Phnom Penh Post" ...

I really very much miss "the Cambodia Daily"... It was the only paper that regularly printed very detailed exposés about the real crooks of Cambodia, la familia and its network of cronies and their nefarious land deals, banking practices and true net worth... Nowadays, the so-called mainstream press is full of petty diatribes like this against the non-existent opposition. Lately, there have already been threats to disband the Candle Light Party, same as they did to the Cambodia National Rescue Party...

Cambodia descends to the absolute nadir of societal cowardliness with this kind of silly, almost clown-like press toadyism. Blah!!!

What a pity for civilization... The enforced disenfranchisement of a nation, the gutting of free press speech, the impossibility of social development or real progress for education or public health care -- and the never-ending humiliation of mutual human respect, and the prohibition of natural intelligence...

Yeah it probably doesn't get much safer for a "journalist" than to write about Sam Rainsy. What's he doing these days anyway? Munching frog legs in Paris while his comrades are locked up in Cambodia?

I'm quite sure Sam Rainsy isn't a bigger crook than any of the others around, but what I well and truly despise him for is his stirring of hatred towards the Vietnamese. At times, his entire speeches seemed to be senseless tirades against "the yXXn". I was actually waiting to see foam dripping from his vile trap.

Cambodia is a dictatorship, and a laughably fawning media is just one facet of a dictatorship.

We all know how things work here. Nothing about this thread should come as a big surprise to anyone.

The last time Rainsy was in a ministerial position in Cambodia he was ousted by his own party because he "was too corrupt"

And he sure lives a well heeled life for a man without means, so probably he is a bigger crook than most

Hard to have press freedom when journalist are paid NOT to report the news and if they do, they get in trouble or worse..
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
