Banana's

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Commercially grown bananas are bred to have very small seeds and are often sterile.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Yes, there's one kind of bananas in Cambodia (recognizable: short and relatively thick) you have to be careful with, they generally have some large seeds inside. These bananas are relatively cheap and called 'cheek prey' which means 'bananas from the forest'. For me they're the least favorable. The 'cheek pong moan' (chicken egg bananas) are the smallest kind, much more tasty, more expensive and without the seeds.

My Khmer better half says they're bad luck. Or more specifically the trees from which bananas with seeds grow. There's a Khmer ghost tale (and movie inevitably) about a female ghost (or possibly an "aap"... the floating torsos with entrails hanging down..I think they're always female) that enters a home by climbing this type of tree planted too close to the house. Chaos ensues.

Bad (and good) luck seems to be everywhere, mind you.

The banana ghost is not an Ap. It comes from a specific type of banana plant, so they must be planted a certain distance from your house.

That's the one. I'm not sure why my Mrs associates it with the bananas with seeds. Yeah now that I think of it the aaps are thought to dwell under houses....

My boss gave me a whole bunch of bananas yesturdday , they looked beautiful .
Today they are all brown and ugly , o.k. tho peeled , I ate 3 and there are 6 left .
Is my house too hot ? Jr. wont let meat , fruit , or vegetables anywhere near his mouth
The internet says don’t eat more than 2 per day …
