An eyewitness reported that around 100 young men turned up at the scene in vehicles before the shooting began.
PHÚ QUỐC — Two people were killed in a shooting on the southern island of Phú Quốc on Thursday, Kiên Giang Police announced.
According to the Phú Quốc City Police, at about 11 am Thursday in Bến Tràm, Cửa Dương Commune, a group of people building a house were shot at by another group.
An eyewitness reported that around 100 young men turned up at the scene in vehicles before the shooting began.
One victim was killed at the scene, another died on the way to the hospital, and four sustained severe injuries.
The initial cause of the shooting was deemed to have been a land conflict.
The murder weapons have not yet been found but from the evidence recovered at the scene, shotguns with lead ammunition in copper casings were used.
Due to the severe nature of the case, Kiên Giang Province police have deployed one deputy director from the provincial police department and the head of the investigation unit to oversee the investigation.
So far, 17 suspects have been detained. The investigation is ongoing.
Routes connecting Phú Quốc to the mainland have been sealed off as part of the investigation. — VNS

Police in Kien Giang Province, southern Vietnam have arrested 29 people after two people were killed and three others were injured in a shooting which stemmed from a land dispute in Phu Quoc Island City on Thursday.
Seventeen in relation to the incident were arrested on the same day, followed by 12 others on Friday, according to local police.
Authorities also seized two guns, 19 bullets, and one 16-seater bus, while having launched legal proceedings against those involved in the case.
Border guard officers are scrutinizing passengers at ferry wharves and routes leading to those venues on Phu Quoc to prevent relevant people from fleeing to Cambodia, which is only four kilometers away from the Vietnamese island by boat.
