Cambodia News, (Phnom Penh): In order to earn money from social media, a small number of young people who no longer care about the law are ready to destroy even endangered birds.

Despite education efforts by conservation officials at the Ministry of Environment, a beautiful young woman posted a video on Eat With Keomony Facebook page, showing how to chop up and cook what was reported to be the carcass of a giant ibis. Giant ibis are an endangered species of bird native to Cambodia, and it is illegal in Cambodia to capture, kill, or eat one.

After the angry reaction of the public, on October 20, 2022, the owner of the above Facebook page deleted the video clip from the social network Facebook.

Correction: The bird on the table was apparently an Asian Openbill Stork, which not as rare and endangered as the Giant Ibis.

But she can mitigate by reporting the farmer, and raising awareness of the wildlife issues on her ‘web’ page. Actually put her position as one of these influencer types to good use, not just counting the proceeds.
She could also take a moment to correct people’s errors in judging her incorrectly, by presenting the facts.

“It’s not this bird, it’s that one.
This one is endangered, here is some information about these issues, and the threats to habitats.”

Etc, etc.

Otherwise, it is quite possible that she would have cooked a dead endangered one from her own ignorance, anyway.

Surprised we don't see more of these stories than we already do considering the amount of countryside scrubbers making very crappy YouTube videos

All true what you say..but the follow up story wont be acknowledged by as many people as the "shocking viral news" that eating a rare animal caused. So in the sum there will be a huge negative effect on her (and the country habits she is representing).

I also share your opinion that the concept of "dont eat rare animals" does not apply to some habitants of rural Cambodia. They eat what they can catch. Education will be the key.

It's still illegal to hunt and eat most wildlife whether it's endangered or not.
Silence, exile, and cunning.
