4 Escape Death After Truck Brakes Fail on Steep Descent
Cambodia News (Koh Kong Province): On October 17, 2022, at 11:00 pm on National Road 48, between kilometers 61 and 62 in Chimeal village, Angdong Teuk commune, Botum Sakor district, Koh Kong, a Hyundai truck (PNH 3E-0390) lost control while driving down a steep hill. The truck driver lost control as the brakes failed and the vehicle left the road and rolled over down a steep gully.
Fortunately, the driver and passengers escaped relatively lightly from the potentially fatal accident. Borey, the 35-year-old male driver, suffered a broken leg, and 3 other passengers suffered only minor injuries. The cause of the brake failure was due to speeding. [sic]

A whole lot of those dumper trucks don't have any operational brakes. They just use the gearing to slow down.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

Very efficient. Driving standard, maintenance, loading issues all quickly eliminated from being a factor on a steep hill. Just the speed. I wonder who made that assertion?CEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 12:25 am The cause of the brake failure was due to speeding. [sic]
It’s just as well there was no one close by to run into.

Anyway, lucky survivors. Those trucks are death-traps.
And what do you think happens to a truck like that, after it gets hauled back up the hill and on to a tow truck ??

What is the vehicle check process for those types of things? Having just come from the MPWT vehicle inspection centre I see a load of cars, vans & even HGVs, most seem in good repair - ahem. But when driving out on the National Roads, you see all kinds of stuff that is clearly not roadworthy and didn't just become that way overnight, not even within a year.
Time for Cambodia to get rid of these vehicles along with all the motorbike+cart crap unless done properly with lights, etc like a normal trailer. Allowing that stuff on the new highways at speed is just asking for trouble when it comes into contact with a proper non-grey import; or like this case, perhaps just by itself & terrible driving skills.

Motorcycle carts, remorque style tuk tuks, home built trucks and van conversions should all be banned from the roadSpigzy wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 2:58 pm What is the vehicle check process for those types of things? Definitely agree, but there are so many and also so many poor livelihoods depending on them that it isn't practical I think to come out with a blanket ban / junkyard bonanza. But a simple rear tail/brake/indicator light hook up to the main vehicle controls isn't impossible like even the worst trailers/caravans you see in the West. For Samnang and the vehicle inspection boys plus a local mechanic to install I reckon these could almost be given out by the government after some tasty donation "From the People of XYZ" to radically improve traffic crash stats in rural areas overnight.Jerry Atrick wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 3:25 pmMotorcycle carts, remorque style tuk tuks, home built trucks and van conversions should all be banned from the roadSpigzy wrote: ↑Thu Oct 20, 2022 2:58 pm What is the vehicle check process for those types of things? At some point there probably should be a mandatory driving re-test of the entire nation, but I'll cross that bridge when the Japanese/Chinese pay for it!

Light trucks (dumper) are done at the car place. Big trucks have a dedicated facility but I’d imagine it’s not like the very strict tests back home.
Apart from overloaded trucks the worn out suspension fucks up the roads. When the suspension bounces the forces are supposed to be taken up by the shocks, coil springs/leaf springs and air bags, and to a lesser extent bushes.
Here they just keep bouncing. That’s up to 30 tonne smacking into the road each time.
