I've been told by an older Cambodian friend that the age of consent being 16 is the law among Cambodians, that the police will not apply that same standard when it's an of age foreigner and a local 16 year old. It's 16 for "love" and 18 if it involves money, gifts, favors, etc. Also, he's American. The US government doesn't give two shits what the local law is. He's an adult, the student is a minor and bellow the age of consent according to US law. He can still be prosecuted in the US for his conduct here in Cambodia. This guy is screwed.

Yes, you only need to have paid attention to the news to realize that the age of consent is higher than many on here have assumed.

And maybe most important: According to article 239 of the Cambodian criminal code the age of consent is 15.

There's one exception and that's in case there's prostitution, then the age of consent in Cambodia is 18. Since in the chat the teacher mentioned payments for hooking up that might be applicable here.

But I can see why ACE didn't want to go down that road. The messages the teacher sent to his student were so clearly crossing every line (you can even argue if it's good practice when a teacher has private chats with students) they could simply kick him out for that no matter the age of the student.

Yeah, tell that to the judge.

The UK has the same law - it doesn't matter what the law of the local country is, British tourists / expats cannot have sex with anyone under 18 while abroad, but to be honest, given that he was 17, and the 'spirit' of the law is to prosecute child molestors, I'd be surprised if they were prepared to pour the money and resources into prosecuting someone who had had sex with someone just one year below that age. They can't even keep up with catching the real child molestors. There are many, many cases in the UK where men have had sex with 15 year olds (one year below the British AOC) and the police have turned a blind eye.

Okay, normally I don't like to post stuff on forums or gossip or snitch on people, but the conduct we are dealing with in this instance really kind of eliminates any concerns about other people's privacy and so forth, obviously, so I'll tell you a couple things I know about Mike.

These are things that I've either witnessed firsthand in front of me or actually had conversations with him about. Many years ago in both cases, but not that many years ago - probably the first year or two he was in Cambodia or thereabouts.

1. He is a drug user. He likes to use ice to keep his weight down and for the secondary sexual effects (enhanced libido, better orgasms, marathon sex etcetera ... if anyone is confused by this assertion because of their own experiences on it, well, pop a couple of viagra and give it a go and you'll understand). Years ago during his first couple of years here he'd use maybe a gram a week, which isn't tons, but it ain't nothing either. All that energy he has in his TikTok videos suddenly seems a little less "fun" doesn't it? Lol

2. I hate to tell this about anyone publicly but given the situation ... Mike is HIV+ and has been since long before he came to Cambodia. In fact, it was the reason he came to Cambodia. He was teaching in South Korea the year they changed their work visa policy to require an HIV test and he knew he was HIV+ and couldn't pass it so he first moved to Vietnam and taught there for a relatively short while and then relocated to Cambodia.

How do I know these things? I saw him do #1 with my own eyes and he told me the details of #2 himself - it came straight from his own mouth. And in fact, long before I met him, I was told about his situation by the friend we have in common who we met through.

If you have had sexual relations with him - whether you are of age or under it - get yourself tested.

He never told me this directly, but our common friend once told me that Mike did not tell his sexual partners he was HIV+ and he did not always use condoms, either. He was, apparently, very cavalier in his attitude about it all - at least according to our mutual friend, which means that I don't know that detail as 100% fact the way I do the two points above, where, like I said, that was him doing that in front of me and telling me that himself. But I include it anyways because it's pretty disturbing and his conduct negates his right to privacy at this point and has earned him the fullest possible rebuke, essentially, so yeah.
