Lt. Gen. Chuon Narin said that according to the explanation from the passenger on the boat, Chen Gui Sheng, a Chinese man, a representative of the victims, said that they had left China from port Guangzhou on September 11, 2022, by a speedboat, then boarded a wooden fishing boat on September 17, 2022, heading for Cambodia with two Cambodian guides.
Then on September 22, 2022, the wooden boat above broke down and could not move forward, then began to sink gradually. He said that another boat then arrived and took the two Cambodians aboard, leaving the 41 Chinese passengers to fend for theùmselves as the boat sank in the middle of the sea.

Authorities and rescue teams are still searching for the missing passengers. The immigration status of the Chinese nationals is not mentioned, but it seems likely that they were being trafficked into Cambodia illegally.

UPDATE
As of noon on Friday, one person who fell into the water was rescued and a victim's body has been found. In a bid to mobilize people to participate in the rescue work, the provincial government issued a reward notice to fishermen in nearby waters, offering $500 for every person rescued. The search and rescue operation is still going on.

The topic related to the incident received more than 72 million clicks as of press time on Sina Weibo, with many netizens sending their condolences to the victims and wishing them safety. "Hope they can come back safely," one netizen wrote.

A video going viral online showed that the capsized boat carrying some people sinking into the sea with some people shouting, according to Chinese media outlet Jiupai News.

Some netizens questioned whether it was legal for the boat to carry so many Chinese citizens in Cambodia's sea. There have been reports that the Chinese people were being trafficked or smuggled into Cambodia.

The Cambodian guys who were working in a minor role in the smuggling operation got rescued. The rescue craft was probably too small to rescue everyone. The boat was likely being observed and they didn't want the hassle of being caught with a bunch of undocumented foreigners with no valid papers. It's tragic but they were most likely gangsters anyway. Normal people don't travel in junks. 8-)
