Funny story from the province
So I'm in the province and needed some already cooked rice as I am alone in the village for a night.
I have my salmon, my avocado, the nori and wasabi and soy. Just a bag o cooked rice and ready to go.
Off to the road market with loads of sellers of dinners. I thought, sure, any one of these places would also sell / provide rice too with their cooked meals..
Oh silly me! The 1st, then 2nd and 5th said No have, and they pointed a finger in a random direction. Ok, after the 6th attempt, I did my best to ask exactly where, in the land of Yum bai howie? is this magical monopoly store of alrewdy cooked rice? A kind women pointed and said on the left side of the road.
I slowly trolled along on the wrong side of the road, and finally, wala! A seller of small bags of cooked rice.
I was so happy. I then asked the seller woman if her husband was in the military and if he has told everyone that if they sell 25 cent bags of rice they will be shot!? She smiled and her husband came over. I asked the same question, to smiles and a nod.
So strange and funny.
Happy Pchum everyone!

Re: Funny story from the province
Do you mean "Voila !" ?
Just curious, i wonder if that's the French word that made it's way through Khmer, or just a Khmer or else equivalent that happens to sound similar, or just the plain "Voila" but written your own way ?
It could also be taken as the Arabic equivalent of "the prophet is my witness", a.k.a "i swear to god", so, lots of possibilities here.
I'd say number 3, assuming you are an Anglophone, but i could be wrong...

That’s the one that popped into my mind.
followed swiftly by a ‘where’s wallah?’ Image. (Funny what the mind conjures up sometimes just after waking up)
