'Swallowed' by China: Cambodia's Ream base expansion raises alarm

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Same sentiment in the West with a man called Hitler in the last century. Allowed Nazi Germany to militarize, then occupy the Sudantenland, and so on. Millions died to stop Hitler.

If China were like the Aussies and the Kiwis, there would be no problem.

Just my opinions.
I don't think the issue is that black and white, it's complicated. Not saying you're necessarily right or wrong here because when it comes to China who really knows, they can and do pull some underhand shit but at the same time I think they're the butt of a lot of fear-mongering and propaganda from countries that always have to have a boogeyman to keep people scared.

You have to remember that for decades China has had major issues with western powers building bases all around them. They've been attacked and colonized by numerous countries and they've never gotten over that, it's something they take very seriously - part of the social contract the CCP has with the people is not allowing that to happen again so you can see how, when a country with a long history of invading other countries circles them with military bases they'd feel threatened and might feel the need to push back.

You use Hitler as an example of what can happen - well to the Chinese they feel a bit like other weaker countries might have felt when they realized what a monster Hitler was, and then saw him moving troops and tanks to their border.

The Cambodian city, once a sleepy beach getaway, has transformed into a bustling hub for casinos and hotels in recent years as Prime Minister HE rolls out the red carpet for Chinese investment. But China's growing clout there -- in particular, Beijing's decision to fund the expansion of the Ream base -- has caused alarm both in the U.S. and among the city's locals.
Why is this the only time the US suddenly has a convergence with Khmer locals, and pretends to care? What locals are actually "alarmed" by this? The same sort as those who firebombed the Cambodian-Vietnamese friendship monument in Phnom Penh because they thought it gave too much credence to the "Yuon"? Who are these people, and why are they important?
=China's presence in Cambodia is spreading beyond Sihanoukville. About a three-hour drive northwest from the base lies Dara Sakor International Airport, which is expected to begin commercial operations soon. The airport was developed by a Chinese company with Chinese funds. A Chinese player also will be involved in its operation.
China is developing a previously underdeveloped region? And doing it without Western approval or financing (subject to swift withdrawal if our Prime Minister doesn't start teaching transsexual dildo dilation to rural villagers in Kratie? How dare they!! The people of KPS exist to serve Anglo tourists banana pancakes and exotic memories of buying dope on the beach from sun-burnt peasants forcing a smile, how could they possibly interrupt such beautiful a beautiful place with the promise of higher incomes and better services?

Though the entire region surrounding Dara Sakor has a population of 100,000, the airport is home to Cambodia's longest runway, at 3,200 meters. The U.S. worries that the facility could be used as a military hub.

Couldn't have that, could we? It may obstruct the view from the US base in Thailand, or perhaps interfere with the runway in that glorified USAF hangar known as "Singapore":

"I hope we don't get dragged into an international conflict," said a taxi driver in Sihanoukville.
This same taxi driver wanted to invade Thailand years ago when some random tart on a soap opera said that Preah Vihear belonged to Thailand. I'm not sure why he's even being interviewed in this article.

I think we should be much more worried about the evil Canadians. For sure, they look smiling and harmless. But nobody could be that nice.

What are they planning? World domination? Or worse?

China has been the dominator for millennia. All other nations were vassals and paid tribute. Everything flowed through the Middle Kingdom. Even Chinese culture dominated their neighbors.

The last few hundred years is an anomaly in Chinese history.

Now they’ve come to correct that anomaly.
