More evidence of a military base being built despite denials by Cambodian and Chinese official

Same sentiment in the West with a man called Hitler in the last century. Allowed Nazi Germany to militarize, then occupy the Sudantenland, and so on. Millions died to stop Hitler.Random Dude wrote:You have to wonder... if there weren't so many US bases in their back yard, would China still see the need to put a base of their own in Cambodia?
If China were like the Aussies and the Kiwis, there would be no problem.
Just my opinions.

Please note that the British Navy paid an official visit to Ream Naval Base in Cambodia just two weeks ago and spent five days there. No alarms were raised.

No secrets to be disclosed on a PR event. I guess the whole area will be offlimits for anybody (even Khmer) soon enough.CEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Thu Mar 02, 2023 5:55 pm Please note that the British Navy paid an official visit to Ream Naval Base in Cambodia just two weeks ago and spent five days there. So Team Naval Base has finally started getting a new pier and is being upgraded? It's been there for at least 50 years and barely changed for decades until very recently. Do other countries get such scrutiny just for expanding their facilities?
Silence, exile, and cunning.

did they also get to pick up deadfish from the beaches. Kohtakiev island is surrounded by sanddredgers. destroying the whole area. Ream shoreline, the whole shoreline between kep and sihanoukville is now 80% demolished. in just a year. if u dont believe it go and look for urself....piers, docks, harbors, freetradezones. the whole coastline people are crying. no more crab, no more fish, no more oysters. livelyhood of thousands destroyed in just a few months.

It's obvious that there has been a lot of private investment on the coast. However it's a long stretch from that to believing that the PRC has taken over.Reecek wrote: ↑Thu Mar 02, 2023 9:36 pmCEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Thu Mar 02, 2023 5:55 pm Please note that the British Navy paid an official visit to Ream Naval Base in Cambodia just two weeks ago and spent five days there. Chinese own billions in property? How big is the chinese share in those private investmenst along the coast?
its mostly chinese companies that exploit the national natural resources?
Chinese own and run a lot of factories in key sectors (how many Cambodians are employed by chinese owned factories?)
the "chinese" share of GDP is getting more and more?
"possibly" chinese armed forces present on Cambodian Territory? (against the constitution?)
I am not shure what you mean by taking over, but the economy is surely on the way to be controlled by chinese interests. I guess that we will have many years with at least 50% of total tourists arriving coming from China which means that the tourism will be mostly dedicated to chinese likings and habits.
Will this lead to conflict with the majority of Cambodians who cant get out of poverty?

Re: 'Swallowed' by China: Cambodia's Ream base expansion raises alarm
The commercial centers of SE Asia have been dominated by Chinese for centuries. When we conflate private businesses with "China" it isn't helpful. The Cambodian economy is very healthy and there is no indication that Chinese government loans for infrastructure cannot be paid off. It's also short sighted not to see how Cambodians are also benefitting hugely from private Chinese investment.
The hysterical and baseless accusations of PLA taking over the country are not helping either. The western media has been ranting about this miniscule port for years, even while it was patently obvious that nothing substantial had changed in decades. Recently there has been some construction, I fail to see what the big deal is. Are sovereign states not allowed to improve their infrastructure?
