The meaning of third world changed after the Cold War and has been decreasing in usage.
https://www.history.com/news/why-are-co ... hird-worldThe “three worlds” model of geopolitics first arose in the mid-20th century as a way of mapping the various players in the Cold War. The origins of the concept are complex, but historians usually credit it to the French demographer Alfred Sauvy, who coined the term “Third World” in a 1952 article entitled “Three Worlds, One Planet.” In this original context, the First World included the United States and its capitalist allies in places such as Western Europe, Japan and Australia. The Second World consisted of the communist Soviet Union and its Eastern European satellites. The Third World, meanwhile, encompassed all the other countries that were not actively aligned with either side in the Cold War. These were often impoverished former European colonies, and included nearly all the nations of Africa, the Middle East, Latin America and Asia.
Today, the powerful economies of the West are still sometimes described as “First World,” but the term “Second World” has become largely obsolete following the collapse of the Soviet Union. “Third World” remains the most common of the original designations, but its meaning has changed from “non-aligned” and become more of a blanket term for the developing world. Since it’s partially a relic of the Cold War, many modern academics consider the “Third World” label to be outdated. Terms such as “developing countries” and “low and lower-middle-income countries” are now often used in its place.
Poor Mr. PhuketRichard. No one will answer his perfectly legitimate question. Yes, the US is on the decline. Dysfunctional institutions, decreasing trust in said institutions, collapsing (literally) infrastructure and an elite that ranges from indifferent to hostile. imperial overreach is another factor. The future does not look bright for the US.

All the problems that exist in the USA show that the american way cant be the best one but still its better than many others. I will always be a fan of swiss type DIRECT democrazy with the power beeing in the hand of the people and NOT in them of the politicans.

No.*
(And being a pedant for a brief moment of mischief- neither continent is entirely, but has elements)
Longer, less flippant answer.
The perceived gulf between developed and less developed nations is not so large nor so clear anymore. I am more proudly Irish and not so proudly British these days. I grew up in the UK; I suspect that the U.S. and the U.K. are similar. Get input from the frogs (and after some gentle ribbing of the roast Boeuf) similar sentiments may well be forthcoming.
It would be great if the developing nations were closing the gap, but the developed formerly first world nations have let themselves slip a bit. Whatever they may have stood for, whatever lofty ideals and standards they represented, they’ve become a bit rotten, or at least stale inside.
A lot of folk in those developing regions perceive the US to be the place to be. I wonder if when they get there, their own previous generations will tell them that it’s not what it was.
What of that second world, what remains of it? That aggressive bit in the middle. Are they the ironic reminder of a previous era, not much better or worse than they ever were? Not much to aspire to from outside, little changed on the inside?

Yes we have a lot of issues and crappy situations in the USA these days, but even if we tripple these problems we will be better off than the rest of the planet.Big Daikon wrote: ↑Thu Aug 25, 2022 3:11 pmExcuse me, your autism is showing.John Bingham wrote: ↑Thu Aug 25, 2022 2:45 pmThe problem is not about offending anyone, the problem is using redundant terms that have lost their original meaning.cabron wrote: ↑Thu Aug 25, 2022 1:49 pmThat is a problem now, we cannot say anything, third world country, banana republic, shithole, May offend someone.John Bingham wrote: ↑Thu Aug 25, 2022 10:13 am As an American, I believe you should use the term "developing country" as the term "third world" became redundant when the Cold War ended in the early 90s.

Re: Is America now a 3rd world country?
I'd say it's like my country, the citizens have a taste of "nation on the way to under-developement / sub-developement", meaning that we are loosing little by little the means that made our industry thriving a whole era.
Musically speaking, sounds like the tempo is accelerating, but i cannot hear basses and treebles as good as before.
Maybe the country is a bit deaf, maybe the whole sound-system turned to shit, anyway, the feeling on the dancefloor is weird.

Maybe for those that have the money. Plenty of countries with better health care, schooling, social security etc.
11.4% of people in the USA live in poverty (2019), Sweden 0.6%, Japan 1.2%, Germany 0.6%, Australia 0.7%.

Re: Is America now a 3rd world country?
With the speed at which the climate is changing, once fertile farmland turning into dustbowls, other areas looking like annual heatwaves, floods or fires that wreck everything could be the new normal I'm wondering how many first world countries will stay first world.
From what I'm seeing the US is having issues on that front, along with most of the world. We might all have to get used to the idea of third-world conditions.
