You wouldn't think a single person would fall for an amount like that, and that realistic numbers would get a greater yield. I read somewhere that that's part of the psychology of the scam. The one per cent of one per cent that will actually take the bait at that point have demonstrated to the scammer that they have a mental disconnect from reality, which is the filter the scammer is deliberately applying. Narrows the target Muppet pool down to just those stupid enough to fall for it, and saves a lot of time consuming sifting.John Bingham wrote:Reminds me of those online scammers who never over you $40,000 or anything reasonable, it's always $548,897,435.34 or something.

Often the scammers are too stupid to realize what wasting time really means.StroppyChops wrote:Narrows the target Muppet pool down to just those stupid enough to fall for it, and saves a lot of time consuming sifting.
http://www.npr.org/templates/story/stor ... Id=7688138But there's a growing online community of people called scambaiters who seek revenge against 419 scammers.
When they receive a 419 e-mail, instead of deleting, they reply — then they proceed to waste as much of the scammer's time as possible. Often, scambaiters will try to humiliate the Internet con artists by tricking them into creating photos, videos, or audio recordings which can later be posted on scambaiter Web sites as "trophies."
One such video recently popped up on YouTube: Two Nigerian men stand over a birdcage at a shop counter, debating whether the parrot at the bottom of that cage is dead. It's a remake of a famous Monty Python comedy sketch from the 1970s, and it's the work of scambaiter "Shiver MeTimbers," UK resident Mike Berry.

Whenever I call her and she says "I have something interesting to tell you" I'm thinking "fuck, please don't tell me you helped a Nigerian prince."

I got a scam email offering macaws in Australia (I used to keep exotic parrots) and immediately got on to Customs. They had me play along for as long as possible to try and catch any Australian involvement, but after about 20 or so exchanges the conversation went cold. It was an interesting process.

My mother always trusts the nice young man from Microsoft Network Support that calls every six months or so. I seriously want to take her computer off her, but what are you going to do.General Mackevili wrote:My grandma would fall for that shit.StroppyChops wrote:You wouldn't think a single person would fall for an amount like that, and that realistic numbers would get a greater yield.
