British Expats Get Married Khmer-Style in Phnom Penh

Cambodia News, Phnom Penh: Cambodians were surprised to see two foreigners getting married in the traditional Khmer way, on July 24, 2022 in Phnom Penh. Not only dressed in Khmer style, the whole ceremony was organized in the Khmer way, from the procession, cutting hair, tying hands, and monks praying. In terms of parades, there were also cyclos carrying fruits and cakes.

In addition to the bride and groom dressed in traditional Khmer attire, the guests, especially the foreign guests, also dressed up in embroidered Khmer wedding clothes.

The bride is British and the groom is a Scotsman, who met in Cambodia, and who have both been living in Cambodia for over 5 years now. Both of them have attended weddings of their Cambodian friends and they fell in love with the Khmer wedding traditions, so they wanted to celebrate their wedding like this.

This is not the first foreign couple to get married in the Khmer tradition, but this does not happen very often. Good luck to them!

Good for them.

Living in Cambodia and adopting to the culture and the customs of the country in which they are living. Full marks to both of them.

looks like a nice day out - I wonder if they began at 5 am with chanting and stood outside the party venue greeting and farewelling guests until the banquet was finished as is customary?

In order for foreign marriages to be recognised as legal in the UK, the following conditions must be met: The marriage must be recognised as a legal marriage in the country in which it took place, and the parties to the marriage must have complied with the procedures required in the country of marriage.

There is actually no legal policy or framework in place for foreigner couples to get legally married in Cambodia under Cambodian law. It is possible, but they make you go through pretty much the same application process as a foreigner marrying a Cambodian Citizen. The article makes no mention of whether they actually got married legally and were issued a Cambodian Marriage Certificate, or whether they just held the marriage ceremony.

If they didn't set up a tent in the street and shut down the traffic in front of their apartment for a whole day, then it's not a Khmer style wedding.

Maybe our societies tend to consider a wedding as the most beautiful day of one's life, hence the classic black & white tones, the shiny little rock, formal in all it's seriousness, and maybe around here it's more considered as the happiest day of one's life, hence the colorful outfits with lots of gold, flowers, and fluffy stuff.

Me ? As close as i could to be to Sinbad the sailor, a white maharajah for a day, penguins-like tuxedos never-ever had a chance.

A couple of frog friends went full Japanese and it was awesome, better options are availaible and no regrets at all whatever lies ahead, these memories and pics are forever.

Great story, well done! Good news and good luck! Kind of cool that they both travelled thousands of miles separately but met here and married.
Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement.
