Is monkeypox now in Cambodia?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. I very much hate to be politically incorrect these days, but people do realize monkeypox is more of a STD and is almost exclusively being spread by men in the gay community, right? So unless this Nigerian dude was banging his tuktuk driver, it's very unlikely he spread it to anyone.

So if you're gay, feel free let other dudes bang you in the cornhole, but do be aware that this puts you at the highest possible risk of catching monkeypox.

This has been your politically incorrect public service announcement. :hattip:

Official version from the US Centers of Disease Control and Prevention (CDC):

Prevention
Updated July 11, 2022
2022 U.S. Monkeypox Outbreak
CDC is working with state and local health officials to identify people who may have been in contact with people who have tested positive for monkeypox, so they can monitor their health.

Prevention Steps

Take the following steps to prevent getting monkeypox:

Avoid close, skin-to-skin contact with people who have a rash that looks like monkeypox.
Do not touch the rash or scabs of a person with monkeypox.
Do not kiss, hug, cuddle or have sex with someone with monkeypox.
Do not share eating utensils or cups with a person with monkeypox.
Do not handle or touch the bedding, towels, or clothing of a person with monkeypox.
Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
In Central and West Africa, avoid contact with animals that can spread monkeypox virus, usually rodents and primates. Also, avoid sick or dead animals, as well as bedding or other materials they have touched.

If you are sick with monkeypox:
Isolate at home
If you have an active rash or other symptoms, stay in a separate room or area away from people or pets you live with, when possible.

It may be almost exclusively in the gay community now, but HIV-AIDS also started that way and then spread to heterosexual people, possibly via bisexual people. I would be surprised if Monkeypox didn't follow the same history

wrt political correctness, I'm surprised it's still called Monkeypox
Many that live deserve death. And some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death in judgement.

HIV/AIDS transmission is different in Africa vs. the US. In Africa, it was heterosexual spread via the truck driving routes.

In the US, public health measures to eradicate the virus hit a brick wall. The politically powerful gay coalition. Attempts to shut the bath houses in San Francisco and stop spread were denied and it spiraled put of control. Even today, a much larger percentage of public funding is spent on HIV research vs. other diseases that impact a much greater number of people.

This has nothing to do with lifestyle choice and everything to do when public health becomes a political football.

Unless monkeypox only affects gays, expect public health measures to eventually bring it under control.

My aim is not to be a jerk, but can you provide a source to support this? I mean, I'd be surprised to see HIV/AIDS is researched to a greater level than, say, cancer?

Speaking for the UK, a report by the UK Health Research Analytics (2020) showed that 18.9% of the £2.56bn spent on medical research was invested in researching cancers/neoplasms. https://hrcsonline.net/wp-content/uploa ... an2020.pdf. Would a report tool such as this be available where you are? Asking for a friend.

THAI NEWS REPORTS: Thailand has identified its 3rd case of Monkeypox. It’s a German tourist who arrived in Phuket on 18th July. He later started to have symptoms and then tested positive

Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On the morning of 6 August 2022 the Ministry of Health announced that the Nigerian who was treated for monkeypox at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital has been released from hospital with a negative test result for monkeypox, confirmed by the Pasteur Laboratory of Cambodia on 5 August 2022.

Currently, this person has been handed over to the authorities for further legal procedures. The public is kindly requested to be informed and to continue to implement measures to protect themselves from the spread of monkeypox, in accordance with the reminders from the Ministry of Health, dated 5 August 2022.

It should be noted that a 27-year-old Nigerian man with monkeypox, who fled from Thailand to Cambodia, was found and arrested by the police on the evening of 23 July 2022 around Doeum Thkov Market, Chamkarmon District, Phnom Penh. After the arrest, the Nigerian man was handed over to the Ministry of Health and put in quarantine. He has now been released from quarantine.

The origins of HIV/AIDS is fairly debatable with some theories placing it back pre WW2 rather than the commonly held view that it first made the leap from simians to humans in Africa in the 1960's - which is debunked because the blood of a dead man was tested positive for HIV in 1959 in the Congo

A good reason not to eat bushmeat/and or fuck any simians (there are widespread independent accounts of monkeys and other simians being used in brothels all over Africa)

It's quite certain that it was around the world for decades before it's effect primarily on the IV drug addicts and gay male population became undeniable and it was recognised as a "novel" illness in 1980

That's a lot of ways you can catch the pox that don't involve being "banged in the cornhole".
