Expensive fire hazards that will be abandoned soon enough when their owners realize the electric charging is less cost efficient than petrol or diesel and/or something breaks on them and parts can't be had easily or cheaplyCEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Sun Sep 18, 2022 4:24 pm Now in Sihanoukville:

I can understand the car with having all round protection, but the bicycle is very valuable, there's many scooter's in the city, people mainly use them to travel to work and back.phuketrichard wrote: ↑Sat Jul 23, 2022 11:14 amBicycle or driving a carAndyKK wrote: ↑Sat Jul 23, 2022 10:32 amDo you feel safe riding anything?phuketrichard wrote: ↑Fri Jul 22, 2022 5:14 pm sorry andy, there is no way i would take one of those on roads here and feel safe>

My gut feeling is that automotive engineering is pursuing a limited dead end in technology, or at best, a technology which will provided a greater gulf between the haves and have nots.Jerry Atrick wrote: ↑Sun Sep 18, 2022 4:33 pmExpensive fire hazards that will be abandoned soon enough when their owners realize the electric charging is less cost efficient than petrol or diesel and/or something breaks on them and parts can't be had easily or cheaplyCEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Sun Sep 18, 2022 4:24 pm Now in Sihanoukville:

You can wander around any back street in Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Dhaka, Chittagong, Mumbai or Jaipur, and find someone capable of machining an engine block and reconditioning to at least an acceptable level of its original performance.
Yet, in a frequent news publications, you’ll find deaths accorded to mishandling of generated electricity.
Meanwhile, whole industries are fully aware (but down played) of the risks of Lithium based energy cell technology that requires proper handling.
Gasoline/petrol/spirit based energy sources exist for a fairly short time. They burn out, and can be managed, eventually. The very nature of these dense energy cells means that current levels of containment are rather limited.
I’m not sure this technology is going to translate down so readily to the $/£300 old banger short of the scrap heap, especially in developing regions. At least, not without an increasing body count.

Re: I've gone electric
Unless they’re sold cheaply, I can’t imagine electric vehicles selling well here, they won’t hold their value, and might be difficult to sell on.
It’s one thing buying them new, but it’d be a brave man who buys a used electric vehicle here, replacing those batteries is a very expensive business if it’s not carried out under warranty, and no guarantee of their condition, with the possibility that some “bush mechanic” has worked his magic on it after rats gnawed through wiring, or it’s been swamped in a flood.
Dealerships with properly trained mechanics for servicing and repairs will be rarer than hens teeth.
Safer to stick with the good old internal combustion engine here I reckon.

Re: I've gone electric
Family member bought one of these BYD some months ago. Very nice car to drive. The prices of those are very competitive to same size Toyota, Ford and other big brand combustion engine cars. If I remember the BYD E2 list price was $27k. When he bought it there was some launch discount so he paid even less. Toyota Corolla, which is same size, was over $30k. Even the financing deal was better that what you get from other brands. The interest rate was really low for Cambodian standards. He has driven already over 20k km and 0 faults so far.

Not sure about pretentious, but the math makes sense for me. Daily commute is about 100 miles = 140 km. Solar panels means the charging price of electricity is negligible for me, but gasoline is pretty expensive. I spend $100 on gas and tolls every 2-3 days.SlowJoe wrote:This level of pretentiousness is probably what I hate most about most of the EV crowd these days...“ID.” stands for “intelligent design,”
Maintenance initially is pretty low for electric. No oil changes or spark plugs or tune up costs, because there is no gas motor to maintain. Tires, possibly brakes, windshield wipers.
Plus a sealed electric car can drive through water up to the hood (see videos about a Tesla driving through a flooded tunnel).
Cambodia might not be ready to maintain electric vehicles long term. There needs to be experts to maintain and replace batteries and electric motors.
My next vehicle will be electric.

Re: I've gone electric
I have had a chevy Bolt for almost 7 years now, and before that I had a Think electric car. There are huge savings in gas money and they hardly need a service. Oil changes are a thing of the past with those.
However, there are som limitations to be aware off. Like reduced range in the winter or in the summer if you love Your aircon on full blast. There is also the lack of towing capacity.
My wife will not stand for the electric cars and she will not stop driving her Ford Raptor diesel pick up truck. So the money I save on diesel/ gas she more than makes up for.
