Home Alone - 4Yo Shot by 10Yo Brother with Air Rifle
Cambodia News (Siem Reap): On Thursday, July 14, 2022, Kantha Bopha Hospital Facebook page published an incident, stating a 4-year-old boy was being treated for injuries from an air rifle which was used by his brother to shoot him after the children discovered the rifle, which their father had left under the bed. The incident happened in Damrey Kon Village, Sot Nikum District, Siem Reap Province.
Investigations were carried out by the administrative police force led by Brigadier General Teng Chan Nath, Siem Reap Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant Colonel Khim Phalla, Sot Nikum District Police Inspector. The investigations ended with the arrest of the father for further education on the illegal storage of air rifles.
The father, Sorn Phirun, said the incident happened on 13 July 2022 at 8:30 in the morning at the farm house in when relatives called him to say that their eldest son (10 years old) had shot the youngest (4 years old) with an air rifle for field hunting. The rifle had been stowed under his bed for a few days now. But, as the father was busy selling in Dom Dek Market, he left his 4 children at home alone, without supervision(4 years old, 6 years old, 8 years old, and 10 years old). Left to their own devices, the kids found the gun and started to play around. This is when the eldest son accidentally shot his 4-year-old brother and the bullet penetrated the child's lungs.
The father was notified and rushed home, and the family rushed to send the child to Kantha Bopha Hospital. Without reporting the incident to authorities, the father took the gun and burnt it in the rubbish pile near the house.
Police arrived at the scene, but the victim's family was not there as they were taking care of the injured child at Kantha Bopha Hospital. However, the father, Sorn Phirun, agreed that he would go to see the authorities to follow the relevant procedures, after the injured child leaves the hospital.
After assurances from relatives and local authorities, as well as approval from the commissioner, the authorities decided to educate the man to not repeat the offense before allowing him to return home to his family.
