Cambodia to Hold Day of Mourning for Japanese Ex-PM (UPDATE: Bars Closed)
Cambodia News (Phnom Penh): On 10 July 2022, the Prime Minister of Cambodia Samdech Techo HE delivered a special message offering his condolences in response to the death of former Japanese Prime Minister, Abe Shinzo. The audio message from Samdech Techo HE was broadcasted at 3:35 a.m. on 9 July 2022, highlighting that Abe Shinzo's death was not only a tragic loss for the people of Japan, but also for the people of the world, including Cambodians.
The Prime Minister stated that in his two terms as Prime Minister of Japan, Abe Shinzo has made great efforts to promote Japan-Cambodia relations to become a strategic partner. In addition, Abe has stepped up support for development in all areas of Cambodia, including infrastructure.
PM HE also reiterated that Mr. Abe was also the Prime Minister who has promoted ASEAN-Japan relations and Mekong-Japan relations.
To express his gratitude for Abe Shinzo's sincere love and affection, Samdech Techo has decided to hold a nationwide mourning ceremony on Sunday, 10 July 2022, and instructed the National and International Festival Committee to pay attention to organizing the mourning by requiring the national flags to be flown at half-mast in schools and various ministry and government institutions throughout the country.

The Ministry of Tourism has issued a notice that all Karaoke, entertainment clubs, bars, discos, and beer gardens must shut tomorrow for 1 day tomorrow (June 10th) to mourn assassinated former Japanese PM Shinzo Abe.
The notice was issued on the recommendation of Prime Minister HE.
The notice says that ‘Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe was assassinated on July 8, 2022.
In the past, he has fulfilled important tasks and missions for building friendship with the people of Cambodia and raising the level of bilateral relations between Cambodia and Japan as a strategic partner in helping to develop Cambodia in many areas, including infrastructure, resource building. People and other development programs.
To join the Royal Government, which declared July 10, 2022 as an official day of mourning, the Ministry of Tourism has introduced the following:
1. Owners or business managers of karaoke (KTV), entertainment clubs, bars, discos and beer gardens throughout the provincial capitals must suspend business activities for one day, on July 10, 2022.
2. The owner or manager of the restaurant and canteen business must suspend the sale of alcohol for one day, on July 10, 2022.
3. The Director of the Capital-Provincial Department of Tourism shall disseminate and educate the owners or managers of the above tourism services business to implement the business suspension in accordance with this circular effectively and responsibly.’

Cambodian High-level Delegation Pays Homage to Late H.E. ABE Shinzo

Samdech Akka Moha Sena Padei Techo HE, Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Cambodia, led a high-level delegation to pay his last respects to late former Prime Minister of Japan H.E. ABE Shinzo, at the Embassy of Japan in Phnom Penh this afternoon.
On the occasion, the Cambodian Premier signed the book of condolences, expressing his deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences over the passing of H.E. ABE Shinzo, which is a great loss and indescribable suffering.
“A long-time good friend of mine and Cambodia, the Late Prime Minister ABE Shinzo had worked closely with me in enhancing the bilateral relations between Cambodia and Japan during his premiership, including the elevation of our bilateral cooperation to Strategic Partnership in 2013. His Excellency ABE will be dearly missed, and his legacy will be forever remembered,” Samdech Techo HE wrote.

As I expected, nothing was closed here in Siem Reap, all bars etc open,with the average Khmer saying "who Shinzo?" and the average expat replying " some bloke in Japan, I think". I did a quick check around the gf's extended family over a few beers and most only had a vague idea where Japan was. Somewhere near Korea, right?
