double pricing Thailand

Thailand is Cambodia's neighbor to the West, and this forum is dedicated to Thai news, stories, reviews, blogs, videos, Thai people and anything else related to the country. A lot of expats have both lived and worked in Cambodia and Thailand, and this area is a place to discuss all aspects of life in Thailand and what's going on there. Most topics are about Bangkok and Pattaya because of their larger populations of expatriates and tourists in those cities, but this is for all things Thai.

Idiots, once again they have failed to consider the optics of such a proposal. They should have just renewed the subsidy scheme for Thais traveling domestically, but then again, they've probably run out of money by now.

The idiot health minister chimes in:
Anutin likened the approach to that of luxury fashion brand Louis Vuitton.

"Hold your ground. Sell premium. The more expensive, the more customers," he said. "Otherwise Louis Vuitton wouldn't have any sales."

Thailand needs to stay competitive or people visit Laos, Vietnam or Bali instead to name a few alternatives only. With news of blatant discrimination of highly desired foreign tourists you surely dont help to mantain a positive image. Discrimination is a very bad tool.

Bali and Laos will never replace thailand, never been to Vietnam, so cant make that call
Thailand always recovers and moves forward.

Its just there is so much for a 2 -4 week tourist to see and do

Of course. Even in my tiny little hometown, local residents get a discount at the public swimming pool. That would include Thais who happen to be residents of my hometown though.

What's dumb about the Thai government's statements is that they always make this about nationality, not residency.

That's the difference, when I worked in Indonesia I used to get the benefit of hotel deals which were at a residents promotional rate. Not a chance Thailand would ever think of extending that benefit to foreigners working in Thailand even though they are paying salary taxes, as we've seen with the travel promotions running through Covid.

Vietnam will be the interesting one to follow in the coming few years.

People have been saying "let's see what Vietnam does" for decades. It never does anything interesting, and very few tourists return to Vietnam. Thailand keeps shooting itself in the foot, but the local competition isn't exactly stellar at attracting tourists. I don't mind the dual pricing either, if only it were tied to residency vs nationality (especially when these countries make getting nationality virtually impossible).
