A fisherman in Indonesia once told me that you can tell if it's going to rain tonight/tomorrow morning by the bats, they won't come out just before it rains. I have no idea how true it is but I feel like people whose lives revolve around the weather probably know how to read the signs.

Ps. I’m sure bats do operate in the rain, but have no data to back that up. I suspect they know better than we do, when it’s going to happen. I’ve got an app for that.

Somewhere in 2008 an exchange about diet/vegetarians, etc. between two Cambodians, one KR survivor with a heck of a story, and a new-riche Khmer left everyone with jaw dropped- not just foreigners.. (names changes to protect the innocent!)

Bopha: “Yes, but you don’t eat cats do you.”

Was talking to one of my Khmer neighbors (we’re out in the sticks) and mentioned I might take a trip into Kampot to eat pizza. Completely bemused he told me he’s never even heard of, let alone eaten, pizza (the guys in his late 40’s)
Tried to explain pizza, but It’ll be easier to take him one day and actually try it, though I suspect he’d be very underwhelmed.

After a brief recap of that bit of history, the same basic incomprehension existed. Understandable, to some extent, given that events in subsequent decades have overshadowed history.

Not Cambodia, but Bangladesh. I arrived one November with a poppy in my jacket lapel. Girlfriend of the time, her cousin ranted about the Poppy being a symbol of White oppression over the black man. Something he’d been taught in school. Bias, bigotry and hatred are not the reserve of us palefaces.

Around 20 years ago I was teaching English.
During an evening class, it was raining heavily outside and a student of about 20 who I would consider to be of above average intelligence looked out the window into the yard next door where there was a swimming pool.
"Teacher", he said, "After it rains, would they need to drain the water from the pool?"
I was baffled. "Why would they need to do that?" I asked.
"Because of the acid rain" he replied.
"Huh. What acid rain?"
He went on to tell me that he had been taught at school that the rain has acid and it can be dangerous.

[So, there you have it, the reason why all motos take cover at petrol/gas stations when it rains]

We once found a huge viper in our room (it was in Vietnam, actually).

We called over the staff to kill it. They went on and on about how they'd remove it, but because they're Buddhist, they wouldn't kill it.

This started to take a while and some Russians staying nearby heard what was going on.

The staff changed their minds and were going to kill it after all, as the Russians offered to pay $100 to eat it, lol.

^^^Reminds me of the last snake encounter I had in Phnom Penh. Big 2.5 metre or so ball python (looked like someone's escaped pet, beautiful thing, smooth skin, few if any blemishes).

Neighbours girls were freaking out and wanted to kill it, some neighbours wanted to catch it and release it, and the Okhna down the street caught wind and wanted to buy it...

One evening sitting around having a few beers when just outside our gate a guy and girl hit our neighbors dog, we heard the bang then the moans, not one person wanted to get up and help and I was told to sit down don't get involved, they were no more than 20 meters away wtf
