Cambodia News (Siem Reap): On 17 May 2022, Prasat Bakong district authorities arrested a man who decided sell sacks of sand as sugar to a trader selling sparrows in the Prasat Bakong district, Siem Reap province.

The victim, 39-year-old Ly Heng who lives in Laok Village, Kandek Commune, Prasat Bakong District, Siem Reap, complained to the authorities in the Kandek Administrative Police Station, saying that on the morning of 16 May 2022, an unidentified man riding a black Honda motorcycle with a white double sack came by selling sugar, and offered to sell her a bag for KHR 100,000. The victim bought it without checking, and later, at 18:30pm, the man offered to sell 3 more bags to the victim and she agreed to buy another KHR 300,000 worth of sugar. She even asked for his phone number as a contact to buy more sugar in the future.

It was not until the next day, at 8:00am on 17 May 2022, after the victim asked to buy 5 more bags of sugar and the suspect delivered 5 sacks of sugar for KHR500,000 within half an hour, that the sister of the victim decided to tear open the sugar sack, only to find out that it was all sand. The women searched for the suspect and detained him and complained to the authorities.

The suspect was Rin Chamroeun, a 34-years-old male who lives in a rented house in Anchanh Thmey Village, Nokor Thom Commune, Siem Reap City. He confessed before the police that he did take sand and placed it in sacks and sold all 9 bags to the victim, and that the money paid to him was already spent.
Currently, the authorities have built a case to send the suspect to the Siem Reap Provincial Court for legal action.

A sack of sand is a lot heavier than that of sugar no? Also, did he bargain for brown or white sugar? :chin:

Sand would be denser than sugar so if he filled the bags to the same level as would be for sugar then, yes, the bags would weigh more.
Now, this begs the question, did the buyer buy more as they realised they were getting heavier bags lol. Maybe the buyer thought, “quick, buy more before he realises his scales are wrong”.
Who knows, but then, most adults here would be fooled by the question, “which is heavier, a kilo of gold or a kilo of feathers”

Better sell sugar to westerners looking for meth, more money, less weight to carry around, less law hassle.

Reminds me of a case in Liverpool in the mid 80s somebody bought a bag of sugar from a corner shop and found it had been cut with heroin

Mmh yeah it's hard to find the "Meth" printed ones :dm:
I wonder how quickly transactions are made...opaque plastic wrap, aluminium foil, roughly wrapped ? Do the "Quick quick, take it, police is near !" trick might still work ?
They're probably slightly more paranoid than an household sugar buyer, but also less prone to scream it out around when tricked anyway.

I'd find it less disturbing than cheating the food, fake rice, real sand, rotten meat...

Wrapped in cling film and singed so it can be quickly hidden in a bunghole.
Silence, exile, and cunning.

That the money paid to him was already spent.
Yes, of course it was on the bags of sand.
Always "hope" but never "expect".
