New British Ambassador Appointed to Cambodia

Cambodia news in English! Here you'll find all the breaking news from Cambodia translated into English for our international readership and expat community to read and comment on. The majority of our news stories are gathered from the local Khmer newspapers, but we also bring you newsworthy media from Cambodia before you read them anywhere else. Because of the huge population of the capital city, most articles are from Phnom Penh, but Siem Reap, Sihanoukville, and Kampot often make the headlines as well. We report on all arrests and deaths of foreigners in Cambodia, and the details often come from the Cambodian police or local Khmer journalists. As an ASEAN news outlet, we also publish regional news and events from our neighboring countries. We also share local Khmer news stories that you won't find in English anywhere else. If you're looking for a certain article, you may use our site's search feature to find it quickly.

Oh i'm sure he will be glad to help after such an introduction !
It's not like he's gonna read the main forum about the country he's in, right ?
You have a point, but have you read the (general) forum comments on the out-going British Ambassador ? The new guy has a lot to live up to.
And he probably only reads Twitter anyway. :stir:
Spot on - I got a reply from him on Twitter & suggested he review some of the fairly uncomplimentary comments about his predecessors on forums/embassy Facebook, etc & get a feel for what he's coming in to. Response was that he's very keen to engage the expats here. All positive on (a) getting a response, (b) seems he genuinely wants to improve relations with Brits here, not just turn up for NGO tea parties & scholarship presentations. Fingers crossed.

UK thanks Cambodia for assisting British residents in Cambodia

The Ambassador of the United Kingdom, Tina Redshaw, concluded her diplomatic mission in Cambodia and thanked Cambodian authorities for providing assistance to British citizens in the Kingdom.

During her meeting with Deputy Prime Minister Sar Kheng, Minister of Interior, on 18 August, Ambassador Redshaw spoke about the immigration and consular assistance of the Embassy and meeting between UK officials with British detainees in Cambodian prisons.

Deputy Prime Minister Kheng praised her efforts to strengthen relations and cooperation between Cambodia and the United Kingdom. He stated that though the United Kingdom had left the European Union, relations between the two countries continue to improve.

As Cambodia has become more of Communist China 2.0, starting with China City and a key part in the Belt and Road Initiative, the country will grow in importance diplomatically.

Hearing all the complaints of various members of the flaws of previous ambassadors, hopefully the new British ambassador will step up the game in helping it’s citizens.

I am puzzled about the comment about mistreatment of it’s citizens living abroad during the British Empire. From the little I’ve read, British citizens living abroad were consistently treated much better than the locals in any part of the colonial empire. So much so, the locals called for independence.

I'm not sure if you read beyond the headline New Kid on the Block but it clearly says she thanked Cambodian authorities for providing assistance to British citizens. Nowhere does it mention the British Embassy's support for citizens. They know they would draw flack if they said that. 8-)

Cambodia, UK discuss Trade and Investment Cooperation
Posted on Friday, 27 January, 2023
Cambodia and U.K discussed requested trade cooperation and the former encouraged the latter to consider investing in the processing of agricultural products, food and agro-industry.

The discussion took place on Jan. 25 during a courtesy meeting between H.E. Pan Sorasak, Minister of Commerce and H.E. Dominic Williams, newly appointed British Ambassador to Cambodia, at the ministry.

The minister congratulated the ambassador on his role and thanked the U.K. for its support especially on trade, health, education, financial management, infrastructure development, and COVID-19 containment in Cambodia.

He also expressed his appreciation of the U.K. new preferential tariff system for developing countries, including Cambodia, contributing positively to Cambodia’s export and employment, and encouraged U.K. more investment on agricultural products, food and agro-industry in Cambodia.

H.E. Dominic Williams reaffirmed U.K. commitment to strengthen bilateral cooperation, including through trade and investment.

The UK is an important market for Cambodia and the two-way trade volume reached US$1 billion in 2022, an increase of about 24 percent compared to US$786 million in 2021.

The main exports from Cambodia to the U.K. include garments, footwear, bicycles, and agricultural products while the key imports from the U.K. to Cambodia are machinery, pharmaceuticals, and beverages.

The British government has reappointed H.E. Ms. Heather Wheeler MP as the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoy to Cambodia.

The reappointment was announced in a statement of the British government dated Mar. 28.

According to the same source, the Prime Minister’s Trade Envoys support the UK economy by supporting British businesses to take advantage of the opportunities arising from the UK’s global trade agenda.

“They champion Global Britain and promote the UK as a destination of choice for inward investment across all regions of the UK, helping to level up the country,” the statement added.

The British Prime Minister currently has 35 Trade Envoys, covering 65 markets.

The Trade Envoys will work with the Department for Business and Trade’s global network to strengthen the UK’s trade and investment relationships within their appointed markets and break down barriers to doing business for UK firms.
