83 Chinese Corpses in Cambodia Await Repatriation
From Chinese news:
83 Chinese corpses in Cambodia: 20 have been left unattended for 3 years
Time: 2022-04-02 15:53
Introduction: The traditional Chinese Qingming (Tomb-Sweeping) Festival is approaching, and Chinese people cherish the memory of their deceased relatives by worshipping their memories and sweeping their tombs. However, according to a Chinese language news source, in Cambodia there are still 83 [Chinese]compatriots who have not been repatriated to their hometowns for burial.
It is reported that the bodies of 20 Chinese citizens are still waiting in Cambodia after 3 years and have not yet been claimed; some of their relatives are doing their best, but do not have the means to pay, while some family members of the deceased still do not know that their family members who worked hard in Cambodia have passed away.
Not long ago, we published the article "Chinese man died after 13 days due to knee abrasion". In the article, Deng Zongyu injured his leg while riding a motorcycle in February. He was infected with tetanus because he did not receive treatment in time, and eventually became ill and died. At present, his body is still stored in Phnom Penh's Dera Temple, awaiting cremation and transport back to China.
There are many others like Deng Zongyu who died accidentally in Cambodia, and their bodies were sent to temples for resettlement and could not be transported back to China.
This [Chinese] reporter learned that there are two temples in Cambodia that are designated to house the bodies of deceased Chinese compatriots, namely the Dekla Temple and the Songrenji Temple. At present, the two temples are full of "corpses".
At Dekla Temple, there are currently 63 Chinese corpses; while Song Renji Temple has stored 20 corpses of Chinese compatriots since 2019, and no one has paid attention to them for three years. Who are their family members? It is not known whether they were informed that their relatives had passed away. Others, due to poor family conditions, could not pay the related expenses, and eventually they stopped contact.
Since the outbreak of the epidemic, it has been very difficult for compatriots to return to China from Cambodia, and it is even more difficult for deceased compatriots to "return to China". A public welfare person who is currently handling the funeral of these compatriots said that since most of the family members cannot go to Cambodia to directly deal with the funeral, they can only handle it through him. At present, the number of funerals waiting to be processed is as high as dozens.
Whether at home or in a distant foreign country, it is a long-standing tradition in China that the fallen leaves return to their roots after death. The Chinese Qingming Festival, known as "Tomb-Sweeping Day" is fast approaching, I hope these compatriots can be returned to their homeland from Cambodia as soon as possible.

That's a lot. Why is the white board in English though. Seems odd.

I'm afraid to ask but someone has to - how do they store them all? Do they have refrigerated rooms?
Once you've read the dictionary, every other book is just a remix.

They have morgue freezers with big drawers that you can pull the icy corpse out on. Source - been in Stung Meanchey mortuary.

So why not cremate them ? Less mass, less space, easy storage, cheaper to send back.

Perhaps, China don't want them back.Ghostwriter wrote: ↑Mon Apr 04, 2022 2:30 pm So why not cremate them ? Less mass, less space, easy storage, cheaper to send back.

Probably cheaper too. I'm surprised they'd keep them that long to be honest.Ghostwriter wrote:So why not cremate them ? Less mass, less space, easy storage, cheaper to send back.

More to do with next of kin and out of pocket costs - as in they’d make money if someone eventually claims them or the Chinese government pays for repatriation.Bitte_Kein_Lexus wrote: ↑Mon Apr 04, 2022 4:00 pmProbably cheaper too.
