New Laptop
Re: New Laptop
I'm considering buying a new Dell 5515 for $759.Kammekor wrote: ↑Wed Mar 23, 2022 6:45 pmThose spec's won't let you down, but if you watch a lot on your laptop you might want a decent, bright screen. That's generally what separates the 3-400$ machines from the 6-700$ ones. The cheapies generally don't have bright screens, or quality IPS panels.xandreu wrote: ↑Wed Mar 23, 2022 6:24 pm Processor: i3
Graphics: Integrated graphics is fine
Memory: 8GB (4GB will be enough but 8GB would be better)
SSD / HDD: 128GB (You said you already have 2TB of storage) - but SSD's (Solid State Drive) are faster than HDD's (Hard Disk Drive)
Screen: 1080p HD (size is up to you)
If you're after a decent screen it pays to visit https://notebookcheck.com a visit. They test all the hardware, including the screen, and publish the numbers (like brightness) in their reports.

Re: New Laptop
I had a HP Stream until recently, it abruptly stopped performing, so I took it to a computer repair shop. I was told they could not repair it, so I took it to another shop, and same outcome. The hard drive had given up, the problem is its on-board storage.
If it could not get any worse, my Toshiba laptop went down at the same time and same problem.
AMD A8-6410 APU with AMD Radeon R5 Graphics 2.00 GHz
8.00 GB (6.96 GB usable)
64-bit operating system, x64-based processor
Windows 10 Pro
But the shop managed to put in a new SSD 250GB drive. I now need a new battery.

Re: New Laptop
Sorry guys, but whenever someone says Toshiba I can't help thinking about this:armchairlawyer wrote: ↑Wed Mar 23, 2022 5:37 pm I agree with JA, I have owned two Toshibas and they have been the most reliable machines I have had. HP not so much (as you would now) and Samsung not so much.
When you're in the UK, look at laptopsdirect.com range of Toshibas. Older refurbs cost £150, new mid-range machines £450. Ball park figures.

Re: New Laptop
I have been working on laptops since more then 20 years, had several different brands, but to be honest, the only Toshiba i had, was also the only who lasted more then 7 years . . . Probably not made in Shanghai or Wuhan ?? !!

Charged me appropriately $55, also reinstalled windows 10 pro. No charge for looking at the HP they could not fix, but gave me detailed information why they couldn't.
