Couple Apologize to Traffic Police who Asked "Coffee Money"

Couple apologise to Police after criticising 15,000 traffic riel fine
A couple who criticised Phnom Penh Police after being fined 15,000 riels for a traffic offence have formally apologised to authorities.

The man and woman had been stopped by police for illegally reversing their motorbike at 7:40 pm on March 9, 2022 in Koh Pich.
Traffic police imposed a fine of 10,000 Riels according to the road traffic law.

However, the couple went onto social media to complain about the fine, saying that they were also asked for another 5,000 riel for ‘coffee and writing fees’.

Sharp eyed police media observers saw the couples complaint and summoned then on the afternoon of March 12, 2022 to the Chamkar Mon district inspectorate to publicly apologize to the public for the information they posted on Facebook.

The couple signed and thumb printed a declaration that they withdrew their complaints and they also were made to delete the offending content from social media.
Finally, the couple thanked authorities for not punishing the two of them and the matter was then declared closed.

They looked down on Khmer society.

The truth has nothing to do with it, sadly.

I don't think calling it Khmer society is very helpful, especially when the people complaining appear to be Khmer. Call it what it is. Corruption.

The more people let it go the longer it will go on for

The government when amending the traffic laws, making fines now heftier to the offending law breakers, and also the police are allowed to keep, if I am not mistaken, 75% of the fine money, with the remaining amount, 25% going to the government.
But I read somewhere the government only received 4% last year of their 25%.

Probably a lost in translation job. "Reverse" in this case likely meaning they either were rolling the wrong way down a one way lane as Khmers enjoy on st.51, 63, Koh Pich, etc; or therafter turned around and tried to turn back the right way once they saw the police & got caught.

Either way, a fair chance the boys in blue needed some pre-KNY funding, but I'm equally not sympathetic to vehicles going the wrong way on one way streets either, so it's a full "meh" from me, they deserve each other.

Going the wrong way, coming towards the oncoming traffic who are abiding the traffic rules, only to be pushed out to their left to avoid firstly a moto that should not be there, but secondly someone putting you into unnecessary danger, because of their selfishness. That's how I perceive 98% of Khmer road users "just plain selfish" with no regards for other road users.

You do get into trouble if you speak bad about khmer people or society as a whole.

Like the gay guy who got beat up and made a Facebook video saying that khmer people dont treat gays well. The police went to take him and he had to apologice to the khmer people for accusing them as a group.
