Post Staff | Publication date 11 March 2022 | 13:59 ICT
Ministry of Environment officials and conservation partners earlier this week visited a 90ha natural forest area preserve in Koh Kong province, which has been prepared for the rehabilitation of tigers.
The visit came after a meeting between environment minister Say Samal and Satya Prakash Yadav, director-general of forests under the Indian National Tiger Conservation Authority, on March 5 to discuss the progress of a tiger conservation project in the Cardamom Mountains in Cambodia.
The visit to the area was made by helicopter and attended by Loeung Kesarao, deputy head of the ministry’s General Department of Nature Protection and Conservation, Suwanna Gaunlet and Hout Sokun of the Wildlife Alliance, Thomas Gray, representative of World Wide Fund for Nature Cambodia (WWF Cambodia), and the Indian delegation led by Yadav. The visit was also joined by Rajesh Gopal, secretary-general of the Global Tiger Forum
The team went to see the Tatai Wildlife Sanctuary, Phnom Samkos Wildlife Sanctuary, and Central and Northern Cardamom Mountain Park.

Re: Officials Prepare for Tiger Release in Cambodian Jungle
They have been talking about this for years. Wish it were true but - 0.9 km2 is just a fraction of the habitat need for one tiger, much less tigers. Whatever prey concentration that would be available in such a comparatively small area would be consumed quite quickly and then what? Villages beware?CEOCambodiaNews wrote: ↑Fri Mar 11, 2022 10:18 pm Environment ministry and Indian delegation prepare to release tigers

How do you "prepare" a natural forest for tigers?

Re: Officials Prepare for Tiger Release in Cambodian Jungle
^^^ 90ha would be about 9.5 km2.
Re: Officials Prepare for Tiger Release in Cambodian Jungle
Apologies for being obstinate but I think one hectare has always been 10,000 m2 x 90 = 90,0000 m2 = 0.9 km2:
The hectare (/ˈhɛktɛər, -tɑːr/; SI symbol: ha) is a non-SI metric unit of area equal to a square with 100-metre sides (1 hm2), or 10,000 m2, and is primarily used in the measurement of land. There are 100 hectares in one square kilometre. An acre is about 0.405 hectare and one hectare contains about 2.47 acres.

Be as obstinate as you like. Could you try this one again, please?
10,000 X 90 =
10,000 X 90 =
Re: Officials Prepare for Tiger Release in Cambodian Jungle
Now we have sorted out the Maths lesson for the day…. And how an errant comma separator can really mess things up, let’s take a look at 9 square kilometres.
A square with sides of 3km. That doesn’t seem like a lot for a wild tiger. A quick Google reveals they will roam vast distances in search of prey and it seems unlikely such a small area would sustain an adult tiger.
I may be a little cynical here but I have the sense this is being run as a PR stunt with the tiger being an expendable part of that stunt. Sure it looks good on paper and most people aren’t going to delve any deeper but I bet their funding / fund-raising sees an increase following this stunt.

= 900,000 which is is 0.9 sq km(1 sq km is 1000m x 1000m = 1,000,000 sqm)Username Taken wrote: ↑Sat Mar 12, 2022 5:42 am Be as obstinate as you like. Could you try this one again, please?

I think you’ve been thrown by cambo swa’s incorrectly placed comma.Username Taken wrote: ↑Sat Mar 12, 2022 5:42 am Be as obstinate as you like. Could you try this one again, please?

A 0.9 square kilometer “reserve” is basically a pen (assuming it’s going to be fenced off to keep tigers and humans apart)

Some people see a tree, other people might see $10,000 worth of luxury timber.
Some people see a tiger, other people might see $10,000 worth of traditional medicine ingredients.
