They were taking out submarines with depth charges rolled off the back of a ship back in WW2, if it was possible to land one close to a sub you couldn't see back in the 1940s it couldn't be that hard to drop one on a pipeline in 2022.

Ok. My point was that if it was possible to take out a sub by dropping a bomb off the back of a boat 80 some years ago, taking out a non-moving target you can see must be a lot easier, even if you only used WW2 style depth charges. When you have access to things like pigs and drones it must be easier still.

I don't know, I've heard expert tell me it's a pretty difficult job if you want to make it a precise action from the sea. They could of course drop a hundred depth charges, and it would probably do the trick, but it would be way too obvious. Sneaking in, precisely, under water without access to GPS, placing and uncharging some explosives (per pipe?) at a depth of 80M in muddy water and getting out silently apparently is considered a difficult job. Well, that's what the experts say.

Time will tell if this was done from the outside or the inside. I guess they can tell it from what they see when they can access the pipe.

Deep sea divers can go to that depth.
Like Random Dude said, charges could of been laid.
It is mapped & detectable.
If they can take out a state of the art guided missile destroyer (USS Cole) with an inflatable dinky
and fly a plane into the pentagon.
Then I'm picturing this guy in a divers suit & a bomb vest holding a metal detector....and a Russian passport

There are deep sea divers that go to that depth. If a free diver can go well beyond, you can be sure specialist deep sea divers are operating

I think the issue is not just whether divers can go 80M deep or not, they can, but it all has to happen unnoticed and an explosive (or multiple) have to be installed. I've never been in 80M deep water but I can imagine working down there isn't easy, and getting there and back will take quite some time with the dive, the work, and the trip back with all the decompression.

Anyway, they did it the way they did successfully and that's f*cking scary in itself. What's next on the seafloor?

Even if it is discovered beyond a shadow of a doubt who was responsible, it is very, very unlikely it will ever be made public.

If it was the Ruskies, they will simply deny it and use the accusations to further escalate the war, making the possibility of NATO intervention even more likely, and if it was anyone else. well, they aint gonna make that public are they?

My hunch is that it was a clear message / warning from Russia to the rest of the world to show that Putin doesn't have to go bombing NATO countries to seek revenge on the west when it's easier for him to attack critical infrustructure, leaving NATO with no clear, defined or obvious reason to attack.
