I hope you are right. Unfortunately, on the ground, a lot of ordinary people don't give a shit in Russia, and many are thoroughly brainwashed by Putin's party line... And there are thousands who will keep their heads down to avoid trouble.

... Look how they simply rounded up men and put them on buses straight to military training camps on the same day of Putin's announcement...

Of course, being a forced conscript won't do anything to boost morale at the front. It may lead to even faster retreats in future, or just a blah stalemate for months and months.

To me this war makes the world appear extraordinarily Orwellian...

Russia's new recruits getting the best weapons hahaha

Edit. I laugh at the Russian leaders not at the men being sent to war against their will or because they know no better.

It’s the Soviet playbook of winning World War 2. The germans had better trained, better equipped, better led troops, but the Soviets totally overwhelmed them with massive numbers of not necessarily superior, but good enough troops.

Sending in draftees won’t get the job done in Ukraine. Ukrainian troops are now experienced and backed by large amounts of Western weaponry. Latest rumor is their pilots are being trained to fly F-16s. This isn’t the Eastern Front of World War 2.

What conscripts allow Putin to do is free up the front line troops at the various Asian border, inside Russia itself and send them into battle.

As long as none of Russia’s Asian neighbors decide to get into a border war, their is nothing wrong with sending in draftees with old, mud caked AK rifles.

Where is it quoted that these draftees are not going to Ukraine, but instead going to be border guards at the border of Kazakstan or Mongolia.

It is being widely reported that they are going to Ukraine.

I can’t see the ruskies spending time and effort training the new intake, driving them to the various border stations, and then rounding up all the ‘experienced’ border guards and driving them to the frontline, when they currently have a concentrated body of men with which to waste the enemy’s bullets.*

Long term benefits of their new master plan.
Lower unemployment (well, less claimants)
Old equipment will soon be renovated and maintained to tip-top condition by a new and motivated work force.
Successful rehabilitation of a significant proportion of the civilian prison population
Lower prison overheads.

They’ll be applauding the guvna, and wondering why they didn’t do this sooner.

*plus. They’ll probably be needing the experienced troops to fend off the likes of Kadyrov’s mongrels when this whole debacle implodes

I meant if Putin was smart, he’s send the draftees off the border. A border guard is probably better trained and better equipped than a fresh draftee.

During the Great Patriotic War, Stalin bolstered his troops with women and prisoners. Often times, children (and the elderly) were sent to the factories to make war material. The Germans sent children and the elderly men to the front lines to fight.

Now will Putin start fighting smart?

I’m thinking smart isn’t really the top issue. He’s survived many decades so far, so there’s something there. It’s just been eclipsed by delusion, megalomania, a lack of situational awareness, surrounded by too many sycophants, and a whole host of other blocks to recognition, realisation and rational decision making.

If Russia was behind the explosions, which seems likely, that might be what it takes for half of Europe to get directly involved in the war.
