Anchor beer seems to be in steep decline …

I don't usually drink beer, may do if I am socialising or possibly with a meal. But I saw this for the first time yesterday, and it was the shops last aluminium bottle.

I have owned and ran bars here for years, drank in many more and never seen any indication of draft beers being watered down?

Also, I don't know the last time I had a 50c beer from a bar, maybe over a decade ago, but how would they get water into the stainless keg? Is it something you became familiar with during your years managing Siam Reap hotels?

No, I was kidding. There were persistent rumors in Siem Reap that some of the kegs were well past their sell-by date and were flogged by employees pf the breweries. Personally, I think the issue was more the lack of hygiene. At the Victoria, we would have the whole rig cleaned on a regular basis, I did not see that happen very often (never) at most places on Pub Street. One reason I stuck to bottled beers.

cheap low alcohol beers have less malt and other fermentable sugars so are bland.
American lagers use some rice and maize.
AFAIK all the local brews are barley malt
Substitution of barley malt with other sugars are a tactic used by huge brewers.

That's a bit weird to me, as i like it, but i hate bitter beers. Heineken is bitter to me, white beers, not easy on the stomach.
Also, i do enjoy Bud, which isn't something to brag about in this beer variety explosion era, and yes, i'm aware it's pretty bland to many, but i can enjoy it's blandness.
I'm convinced already that i just have shit taste when it comes to beer.
What's your input ?

Heineken is definitely bitter, and much more so than Angkor. I’d rather Angkor of the two.

Bud I don't remember well, I did used to drink Coors light frequently back in the beer pong days of my 20s. It was watery which was perfect for Pong.

I just like beers in general and would rather have a Heineken or Angkor than nothing at all.

Once we're in the domain of the Angkor / Anchor / Cambodia / Ganzberg brands down at the local mom and pop store, it feels like a place of comfort to me.

First of all, you know that the chance of drawing a free beer is good. So the total price of the beer is below 30 cents on average.

I always choose the bigger brand, and in that case, Anchor is the one owned by Heineken. Angkor is owned by Carlsberg and Cambodia is the Chip Mong group. Ganzberg is the little one here, and will also be the last choice in my little world.

The whole discussion of bitterness and personal preferences seems to fade in this context. It comes close to a cartoon in my opinion.

Also, do not forget to take a few days off from the beer once in a while. Cheers

I just cannot stand Heineken or Carlsberg. Sure, they come in a little bit above Ganzberg but that is setting the bar rather low. Both Heineken and Carlsberg have always been marketed as premium beers in Cambodia and Vietnam but I have never understood why.

From a psychological point of view, beer quality often has less to do with personal taste. Whatever you find spongy or bitter probably has more to do with brand loyalty than anything else and would fail a blind test. I guess it becomes less of a problem when you drink more than 2-3 cans in a row.
