ACCUSED drug trafficker Peter Gardner, 26, has begged a Chinese court for mercy at the end of a lightening one-day trial for attempting to smuggle 30.2kg of methamphetamine.

Gardner, who faces the death penalty, said he thought the packages — which he claimed not to have opened — contained performance enhancing peptides rather than ice.

There is also a woman involved , but it's not clear where she fits in. Gardner says he took her along on his drug-smuggling trip to "entertain her". Oh right, the bags carrying the dope were in her name.

Gardner almost escaped from China in November last year but stayed to save his travelling companion, Australian Kalynda Davis, in whose names the bags were checked into the China Southern flight to Sydney, after she was stopped by customs officials at the airport.
He said he was about to board the plane to Australia by himself but turned himself in to officials in order to save her.
He said his confession to customs officials in Guangzhou was designed to save Ms Davis.
Gardner said he had only invited Davis, who he recently met through an online dating site, to China to entertain her since she was in ‘low mood’ in that period.

His case is not helped by the fact that this was not his first trip carrying drugs.

It was revealed that it was the second time Gardner had flow to Guangzhou in juts(sic) three months, naming a previous trip — in which he admitted he had carried packages back — in September 2014. He claimed he paid $13,000 for the peptides.

It will be interesting to see if Australia (as dependent as it is on Chinese Exports) will make as big a stink over this, as they did in Indonesia over the Bali 9.

I'm fervently anti-death penalty. I hope that Australia does create the kind of stink that was delivered to Indonesia. I hope the whole world does.

People are stupid but it doesn't mean they deserve to die for it. The prohibition-era of drugs is coming to a close - the UN and most national leaders know it's stupid. They've sold the lie for so long though... that their stupid constituencies and electorates don't know it and therein lays the delay in legalization.

Humanity will look back on this era with shame and regret. This is just killing one more person for no valuable reason. The death penalty does not work. It does not act as a deterrent and in fact, may even act to encourage someone to commit further crime (if you're going to die - why not?). It reduces the state to the level of a criminal. In democracies that enact the death penalty - it means the citizens carry culpability for state sanctioned murder too.

This Australian may be a "low life drug dealer" (for those who actually believe that nonsense) but he's also someone's son. He also returned to try and rescue someone that he had got in trouble - that suggests that he is not beyond redemption either. He could have walked away. He didn't.

For all that people like to look down on others, it only takes a few wrong turns in life to end up somewhere beyond your ability to control. You should support people like this man - next time it could be you.

We cannot dictate what laws a country should abide by. They chose that this crime is punishable by death and that is their choice.

This idiot didn't think about the lives and heartbreak he was causing by trafficking ice onto the streets. It's a fucked up drug and destroys a lot of people, not just the ones taking it as well.

He chose to break the law and now needs to face the consequences, no matter what they may be.

Gardner said he trusted his supplier and considered him a good friend, having worked in his capacity as a carpenter on the source's various housing extensions.

He said he was relayed detailed instructions to follow on his Blackberry, including a specific China Southern flight to catch back to Sydney whose scheduled arrival coincided with the shift times of the syndicate's baggage handlers. Gardner was due to fly onward to Auckland after a layover in Sydney.

"They can smuggle anything, and they can get it for cheap," he said. "Drugs, pharmaceuticals, anything."

He does sound a bit naive. A guy he's been working for suggests some easy money:
"Hey man, how'd you like this really cushy job. I'd do it myself but I'm a bit busy/due to have a baby/have a dentist appointment. It's not really illegal or just a misdemeanor, but anyway you can't get busted cause its all fixed with the customs guys. Just pick up a suitcase and fly back and you get $x for doing nothing. Take your girlfriend, all expenses paid."
It's possible that he believed that he was just shifting steroids,and that everyone was paid off in advance, but for all those future mules out there, I would like to say that if it sounds too good to be true then it probably is.

The syndicate that was running the show would probably like to see him executed to keep him from talking, so if the Australian cops want the info enough maybe they can cut a deal with the Chinese to save his life. It would be more logical to try get to those who are behind the whole deal, including the racket at Sydney airport - sounds like high level organized crime.
